Essential Question

When is breaking the law morally acceptable or morally imperative?

This curricular text set is designed for use with an 8th grade class, either in conjunction with reading the anchor text Legend by Marie Lu, or as follow-up to the completed theme of the novel. The text set, which includes varieties of text (informational, primary source, graphic novel, classic excerpts, and poetry), as well as multimedia sources is designed to explore the essential question, “When is breaking the law morally acceptable or morally imperative?” Each text informs this question, but many also serve to explore more explicit themes included in the text as well, such as rights to health care, the relationship of the anchor text to themes derived from classics. The text set contains a mixture of texts that can be used for individual work, pair work, and teacher led work, and can be used either as a full set, or as stand-alone pieces to work with the anchor text.
