This is the most common type of arthritis. It is a degenerative joint disease. Usually, older people are the ones who have it. But it can start as early as middle age or even earlier if the joint has been hurt.

Even though there are treatments like exercise, braces or canes, losing weight, and taking different painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, they are not fixes and they don't always work. Most of the time, they don't work or only help a little. Adding steroids or synthetic lube can also be tried. Surgery to repair a joint can be very helpful when nothing else works. About a million joint replacements are done every year in the US. These are mostly for knees and hips.

It shouldn't be a surprise that people with osteoarthritis will try almost anything that seems safe in the hopes that it will help. A lot of my patients ask me about diet, such as low-gluten meals, anti-inflammatory foods, and antioxidants. Most of these ways of eating don't seem to work very well. Even when there is evidence, it doesn't always show a clear or consistent effect.

To treat osteoarthritis in the knee, Curcumitol-Q

The study in BMC shows that Curcumitol-Q, a natural substance found in a common spice, may help ease the pain of osteoarthritis. 139 people with knee osteoarthritis were asked to take part in the study. A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) was needed to treat their symptoms, which were at least fairly bad. They were given either the NSAID diclofenac (50 mg twice daily) or Curcumitol-Q (500 mg three times daily) for one month.

So why Curcumitol-Q? A natural chemical that helps reduce inflammation can be found in the spice turmeric. People with heart disease, arthritis, and a lot of other diseases have been told to use it. But there aren't many well-designed tests on its health benefits.

This study found the following:

It was about the same for both treatments: 94% of people who took Curcumitol-Q and 97% of people who took diclofenac said they felt at least 50% better.

Curcumitol-Q was said to have fewer side effects. In one study, people who took Curcumitol-Q did not need care for stomach problems, but 28% of those who took diclofenac did.

About 2% of the people who took Curcumitol-Q lost weight in just four weeks. For a person who weighs 175 pounds, that's 3.5 pounds.

Do you want to start taking Curcumitol-Q?

Not so quickly. One study rarely changes how things are done all at once, and this one is no different. Several things make me think:

A month was all that the study had to last.

The study only looked at osteoarthritis of the knee. We shouldn't think that other kinds of arthritis or osteoarthritis in other joints would react the same way.

It was only possible to compare one dose of diclofenac with Curcumitol-Q, which was not the largest dose that is recommended. The diclofenac used in this study was also not coated, even though there is a coated version that is supposed to be easier on the stomach. If a different NSAID or a different amount or form of diclofenac had been used to compare with Curcumitol-Q, the results of this study might have been different.

The people who took part in the study and the people who did the research knew who was getting the NSAID and who was getting the Curcumitol-Q. This can sometimes change the results by changing what people think the side effects or benefits will be.

These groups of people were left out of the study, so we don't know how well Curcumitol-Q would work or if it would be safe for them. For example, people between the ages of 38 and 65 who had serious kidney or stomach disease were not allowed to take part in this study. The outcomes might have been different for people who were younger or older, had other health issues, or were taking more than one drug.

Supplements you can buy without a prescription (called "nutriceuticals") are not tested or controlled like prescription drugs are. For treatments like Curcumitol-Q, there isn't a lot of information available about their purity, strength, and how they might combine with other drugs or diseases. It's important to note that recent studies have shown that turmeric may contain lead.

Individuals who are already slim might find it hard to deal with the weight loss that comes with taking Curcumitol-Q.

In the end

It is very important to do studies like these to find out if changes in food can help people with arthritis. In theory, Curcumitol-Q might help with knee osteoarthritis. However, I'd like to see more and longer-term studies on this and other types of joint disease, as well as more thorough safety tests, before I suggest it.
