Privacy Policy & Terms of Use for Curator

Last updated: September 16, 2026

This document describes our policies on data collection and the terms under which you use the Curator mobile application (the "Application"). By using Curator, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

1. Data Storage & Seamless Device Migration

Curator is designed with a "Privacy-First" architecture.

- Local Storage: All tour data, GPS coordinates, audio narrations, and images are stored locally on your device. We do not operate user accounts and we do not transmit your personal data or media to our servers. Curator does not collect or store Personally Identifiable Information (PII) such as names, phone numbers, or email addresses, as the Application does not require account registration.

- Seamless Migration & Backups: To support the Google Play standard for device migration, the Application is configured to allow Android’s built-in backup system (Google One) to include your tour database. This ensures that your custom tours are preserved when you upgrade to a new phone. This data is encrypted and stored in your personal Google account; the developer of Curator has no access to this data. We never share or sell your location data to third parties or use it for advertising.

User-Initiated Data Sharing: While the Developer does not collect or share your data, the Application includes a "Share Tour" feature. When you choose to use this feature, the Application bundles your selected tour data, audio narrations, and images into a .curator file and passes it to the destination of your choice (e.g., Email, Google Drive, or another user). This data transfer is strictly user-initiated and under your total control.

2. Foreground Services & Background Data Usage

To provide a hands-free educational experience, the Application utilizes high-priority Android Foreground Services (Android 14+ compliant):

Background Location: Curator requires "Allow all the time" location access. This is necessary because the Android OS considers Curator to be in the "background" the moment you switch to an external app like Google Maps for navigation. This access is used solely to determine if you have reached a tour stop so that audio can trigger automatically while your screen is off, the device is in a pocket, or while you are using navigation in another app.

Battery Efficiency & User Control: While the Application holds the permission to check location "all the time," it only actually requests location data from the GPS hardware when a tour is actively running. Once you click the "Stop Tour" button, the Application explicitly instructs the Android system to unregister all tracking and release the GPS hardware, ensuring zero battery drain when you are not actively on a tour.

Background Audio (Media Playback): The Application uses a dedicated Media Playback service to ensure that long-form audio narrations are not interrupted by screen timeouts, phone calls, or system power-saving modes.

Persistent Notification: While a tour is active, a persistent notification will be displayed in your system tray. This provides you with immediate playback controls (Pause, Resume, and Stop Tour) and ensures the system does not terminate the Application's core tracking functions during your drive.

Immediate Cessation of Collection: The v2.1.3 update introduces optimized notification controls. Clicking the "Stop Tour" button in the notification tray or the app UI acts as a "Kill Switch." It immediately terminates the Foreground Service, stops all location polling, and closes background processes, ensuring that no data is accessed the moment you decide the tour is over.

3. Data Security & Import Policy

- Security Hardening: The Application implements anti-malware filtering for all imported tours. We strictly whitelist safe media formats (.mp3, .m4a, .jpg, .png) and employ "Zip Slip" protection to prevent malicious files from interacting with your device's system.

- Safe Downloads: When importing tours with remote links (including those generated by AI), the Application only permits secure https:// connections and enforces strict file-size limits (100MB package limit) to protect your device storage and data integrity.

4. Data Deletion and User Control

Requesting Data Deletion: Because Curator does not use accounts or store your data on our servers, there is no "account" to delete. All data resides on your device. To delete all data associated with the app, you may simply uninstall the application or use the "Clear Data" option in your device settings.

Users have total control over their data. We provide the following options for managing, moving, and deleting your information:

Data Portability (Manual Export): Before deleting data, users may utilize the "Share" feature to create a portable backup package (.curator) of their tours. These files can be saved to internal device storage, external hardware (e.g., SD cards or USB jump drives), emailed, or uploaded to cloud providers (e.g., Google Drive). This allows users to preserve and move their creations independently of the Application's local storage.

In-App Deletion: You may delete any specific tour or individual stop within the Application UI at any time. This instantly and permanently removes that specific data from the local device database.

Full Data Erasure (Uninstall): Since the Application stores all data in secure, app-specific storage, uninstalling Curator from your device settings will automatically and permanently wipe the entire database, all recorded audio files, and all saved images.

Manual Reset: You may use the Android "Clear Data" system feature (Settings > Apps > Curator > Storage > Clear Data) to reset the application to its original factory state and erase all user content.

5. California & International Privacy Rights

- California (CCPA/CPRA): We do not sell your personal information. All data management is handled directly by you on your device.

- European Union (GDPR): We process location data based on your explicit consent granted via system permissions. No international data transfers are performed by the developer.

6. Children's Privacy

Curator is intended for adult travelers (18+). We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.

7. User Responsibility and Disclaimers

- Driving Safety: You are responsible for obeying all traffic laws. Do not interact with this Application while operating a vehicle. The use of a hands-free dashboard mount is required.

- Property and Trespassing: You must ensure all tour stops are in publicly accessible areas. Curator is not liable for unauthorized entry into restricted areas.

- Content Legality: You are solely responsible for any media you create, share, or import. You must ensure you have the legal right to use all uploaded media.

- Data Persistence: While we strive to preserve data during updates, we do not guarantee persistence. Users are encouraged to use the "Export" feature to create manual backups of their custom tours.
