Did you know that all of the water on the earth is part of a continuous cycle called the water cycle? Water can convert into any of three different states: solid (ice), liquid, or gas (vapor). In the water cycle water is transferred from state to state and location through a variety of processes.

• evaporation: liquid water turns into a vapor (gas).

• condensation: water vapor turns into a liquid when it touches a surface.

• precipitation: water vapor in the atmosphere turns into a liquid.

• infiltration: water enters into the surface of the Earth

• surface runoff: water that can’t enter into the Earth’s surface flows in the direction of least resistance and merges with a lake or river.

This process ensures that the water on the earth is consistently replenished.
