Most of the time, we probably don’t need a calendar. But every now and then, we suddenly do. And when that happens, we probably don’t need a full-featured calendar app. We just want to know what day it is.
What I wanted was a simple calendar I could quickly open from the menu bar. And I wanted to see three months at once — the current month, plus the months before and after it. Sounds simple enough. But strangely, I couldn’t find one that was quite what I wanted.
So… I try to made one myself.
Once installed, a small calendar icon appears in the menu bar. Click it, and up pops a mini calendar showing three months at a glance. You can choose between two layouts — three months across or three months vertically — and there are four background styles to choose from.
It’s compact, stays out of the way, and is always there when you need it. Just a simple little calendar. But surprisingly handy.
You can also keep the calendar on your desktop, almost like it’s part of the wallpaper. Just choose “Pin Calendar” from the calendar settings.
There are four background styles: Light, Dark, Liquid Glass, and Clear. Choose Clear and pin the calendar, and it blends nicely into your wallpaper as a simple desktop calendar.
When it comes to adding or changing events, you probably want to use the calendar app you’re already familiar with. So first, go to General in Settings and choose the app you’d like to use for editing events. For most people, the Calendar app that comes with macOS should be just fine.
After that, simply click a date in CalendarOurs and choose “Add Event.” Your usual calendar app will open, ready for you to add the event.
Want to see next month? Or go back a month or two? Just use the mouse wheel, or swipe on your trackpad, to move forward and backward through the months.
It works when the calendar is pinned to the desktop, too.
Install the app and a small calendar icon appears in the menu bar. Right-click it to open the three-month calendar. You can choose between a horizontal three-month layout and a vertical one.
And the number on the menu bar icon changes every day, so you can always see today’s date at a glance.
For the Dock icon, you can choose between the regular app icon and a calendar-style display. With the calendar display, Saturdays appear in blue and holidays in red.
If you live abroad or use more than one holiday calendar, you can also choose which holiday calendar CalendarOurs should use.
It’s surprisingly nice to have a calendar you can glance at whenever you need it. Give it a try.
