My name is Ryan Goode and I will be your instructor this semester for Cultural Geography. I'm so excited to have you in our course!
In this class we will be looking at a number of important topics from a geographic perspective. Don't worry, you'll learn all about what a geographic perspective is and why it's such an awesome way to understand the world soon!
For now, I want to leave you with one important tidbit. Human Geographers seek to understand the unequal spatial distribution of social phenomenon on our planet and the consequences of that unequal spatial distribution. In other words, "why are things where they are and why does that matter?" So, in this course, here are some of the key questions we will be asking:
How do different cultural and ethnic groups create unique places?
In what ways do we experience places differently based on our gender or sexuality?
Why are American cities so segregated along class and racial lines? What are the consequences of this segregation?
Why is that lower income BIPOC communities are disproportionately impacted by environmental toxins and pollution?
Why is it that Covid 19 (and other most pandemics) disproportionately impact lower income communities?
How do we create a more spatially equitable future?
I'm looking forward to seeing you online!
Cheers,
Ryan
P.S. - Almost all of the pictures in this module show the international city I did my PhD research in. Can you guess the city? Write your guess in the text of your introductory message board activity and I might even give you a point or two of extra credit if you guess correctly. Disregard the picture of me in San Francisco below, it's not where I did my research. I just like that photo :-)
This course is 18 weeks and fully online
The course begins on Monday, January 8th and ends on Friday, May 19th
We will have no regular scheduled meeting times. All of your work will be completed asynchronously (on your own time)
The course is divided up into several one or two week long modules. Your module will always begin Monday morning and be due Sunday night
Every Monday (or every other Monday) I will make an announcement to let you know that your new module is ready. In my announcement I will also provide you a link to that week's module.
Be sure to quickly check out the module on Monday morning. You want to have a good idea of what will be expected of you over the week.
If you any issues arise during the week that will make it difficult for you to complete the module, please be sure to reach out! We can make a back-up game plan.
It's always a good idea to get your work in 24 hours before it's due. Why? As you know, life happens. If you wait until the last moment to turn in your work and life throws you a curve ball you won't have any time to recover. Give yourself the time to navigate around life's inevitable surprises and challenges.
I accept late work for partial credit. So even if you miss an assignment deadline you should still turn it in!
Your best bet is to simply email me at rgoode@cerritos.edu
I'm pretty good about checking my email a few times a day and you will generally get a pretty quick response from me.
I'm also happy to set up a video chat on Zoom or Skype. Just email me so we can set up a time that works for both of us.
To sign in to our course hit the link below. You will need your student ID and birthday to sign in for the first time.
