KGUR HAS A NEW HOME!
Cuesta College’s Broadcast Communications Program was founded by Eugene Sheldon and Ed English in 1969 and was developed by Bob Hartwig from the mid-seventies until 2005.
Based on an analysis of both curriculum and enrollment data Mr. Hartwig, performed a major upgrade of the department's facilities with mostly donated labor and equipment.
Mr. Hartwig passed away suddenly in 2005. The department was then maintained by dedicated adjuncts and alumni, until John Arno was hired in 2007, and Nessie Atwood in 2017.
"PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEHIND THE NEWSPAPER!" - Bob Hartwig, Otherwise known as The Wizard of KGUR. (1975)
Hartwig joined Cuesta in 1976 as a broadcast media instructor coming from Cal State Chico with a degree in mass communications and later San Diego State with a degree in radio and television. According to longtime friend and colleague Randy Gold, Hartwig was well liked by his peers.
Hartwig's biggest impact was on his students, many of who went on to successful careers. More than a few currently work on the Central Coast.
'Bob was a father figure to many of his students. They knew he cared about them and believed in them and he believed they could succeed and be successful. The students believed in him.
Now it is our mission to keep his legacy alive.
You may ask yourself why it is so important to preserve the integrity of the press. A simple answer would be that the people deserve the right to the truth. A more in-depth answer would be to connect all human beings in this country, and outside of this country and to contribute to the flow of information and communication. Communication is the most important part about being a human, it is integrated in our DNA, and goes back generations upon generations. Without communication, there would be no radio, television, music, literature, education, politics or language. Technology, broadcasting and everything you see before you would cease to exist without communication.
Therefore, maintaining the art of communication is crucial, and it is a major part of our destiny on this planet. That is why our college's newspaper is so important to the folks here at KGUR Radio Station.
Every semester, new students come in from all corners of California to write their way onto the front page. They have one thing in mind when they do it, and that is to preserve the integrity of the press. The Cuestonian will never fail you, everything you read is one-hundred percent authentic.
