C-U Chess is a free community chess program for elementary, middle, and high school kids in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy. We host in-person and virtual lessons, games, and tournaments that help students build focus, creativity, and confidence, on and off the board. Players of all levels are welcome!
Our mission is to make chess accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for every child, regardless of background or income. Through free instruction, community tournaments, and friendly games, we help young minds develop patience, critical thinking, and creativity in a supportive, inclusive environment. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive without financial barriers.
Let’s grow one move at a time!
We host both in-person and online tournaments for our students to gain experience, sharpen their skills, and enjoy friendly competition.
Our lessons focus on making chess fun, accessible, and challenging. They teach students everything from the basics to advanced strategy at their own pace.
Not every game has to be serious! We encourage relaxed, friendly matches where kids can connect, laugh, and enjoy the game.
All programs are free and open to students in the Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy area. Boards and materials are provided for in-person lessons and tournaments. We just ask that students come ready to learn, think, and enjoy the game!
