Arrow of Light Den 5!

Greetings Parents!

Howdy parents! My name is Kevin Garner. I'm so excited to be your scout's den leader this year. I was this den's leader last year when they were Webelos. Also, from Aug 2018 until May 2025, I was Cubmaster. Amy Douglas will also be helping at times as assistant den leader. We're both parents in the den, so we're familiar with their energy and general distraction, but I think they are going to have a great year learning new and exciting things. 😁

If you have any special considerations you would like us to know about your scout on how they learn or how they best respond to adult guidance, please let me know!

About Arrow of Light

Arrow of Light is a transition year as we prepare scouts to move from Cub Scouting to a Scouts BSA troop. The program shifts from the parent-led, family-centered activities of the younger ranks to a more den-centered and Scout-led approach, mirroring the patrol system used in Scouts BSA.

Arrow of Light Scouts are encouraged to take on more responsibility for their den's activities. We will start introducing the patrol method for scouts to organize and lead. 

At the end of the den year, typically in March, scouts will have the opportunity to transition to a scout troop and join the Scouts BSA program. The Arrow of Light rank insignia is the highest cub scouting program and the rank may be worn on their scout uniform to signify that they completed the cub scout program.    

Uniform & Books

Our den wears the tan uniform, which is the first year for cubs. This prepares for the transition to a troop. See our uniform guide here.

Note, if you still come in the blue, that is fine, but the troop will be all tan.

The Arrow of Lights Handbook containing all of the adventures we will be working on can be found online at the provided link. 

Physical copies are available at Scout Shop if you would like one, but they are not required.

Scout Expectations

Scouts should

• Abide by the oath and law

• Follow instructions

• Treat others with respect

• Follow the buddy system

• Work together

• Participate in meetings and activities

• Arrive on time to events

• Wear scout uniform to meetings and when otherwise required

• Be positive

• Do his or her best

Also, remember that we are active at nearly every meeting, so

• Wear closed toe shoes to all meetings

• Be prepared to go outside during meetings (e.g. bring a jacket in colder weather)

If we have any behavior issues, we will try some creative ways to get the kids back on track. We will also try to keep the meeting engaging with activities or crafts, splitting the time so the kids don't bore on an activity.

Calendar

I plan on updating this calendar each month to cover what we have done and what we are planning to do each week. It's tenatively how I'd like to progress through the year, but we'll take input from the scouts on what they'd like to work on. I've noted the required adventures to complete the Webelos rank with a (R). Also, I'll mark with ✔ when we complete each week so you know the activities covered are up to date.
