Pack 87 is now over 50 years old! . Pack 87 was first chartered in 1973. The Charter Organization was the Jackson Elementary School PTA in Northwest Cedar Rapids. The Pack remained there until 1986 when Jackson school was closed due to declining enrollment. Pack 87 was moved to Palo in June 1986 and the Charter Organization became the Palo Volunteer Fire Department.
Pack 87 was initially in the North Star District, but then Pack 87 became part of the Red Cedar District following the re-alignment structure in 2005. In addition, in 2005 the Charter Organization became the Palo American Legion Post 679, and the Pack remained in Palo until 2006. In 2006, the Pack 87 moved to Viola Gibson School for their meeting place and the Palo American Legion Post 679 remains the Chartered Organization.
With so many youth activities surrounding the school location this move provided an opportunity for more youth to become involved in the Cub Scout program. At that time there were approximately 10 youth, and today there are 47 youth registered in Pack 87.
