The increasing diversity in Ontario schools presents educators with a variety of challenges and opportunities. When provided the necessary support and learning experiences, every English language learner with limited English proficiency can learn and succeed. Their strengths can be leveraged to fuel their enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills.
ELLs can grow in a school if all educators share attainable goals for them and all students' backgrounds are recognized.
All ELLs must consider themselves valuable members of the school community.
Even if they take more time than the majority of English language learners to attain academic success, their contributions must be valued and acknowledged.
Tips to support English Language Learners:
Provide accommodations and modifications to the curriculum expectations to provide ELLs with suitable challenges and opportunities that enhance their learning experience and attain the expected level
Be patient and provide extra time, they are working with a heavier cognitive load
Partnership with English-speaking peers and regular practice can improve verbal communication
Provide opportunities to bridge new learning to prior knowledge and experiences
Identify their competencies and plan assignments that build on these qualities
Provide continuous support especially to help with a smooth transition
Maintain a portfolio of ELLs work to document their growth over time
Allow students to speak freely without correction to help build confidence
Be mindful and empathetic of the learner's background to create a safe classroom environment
Honour their cultural background and explain how they do not need to change their identity
View ELLs as individuals with varying cultures, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, races etc and do not make assumptions
