Schedule:
9:00 - 10:00 am: Judging classes (4)
10:00am - 3:00pm: rotation between ID/Gen Knowledge Test, Practical Applications, Team Events, and Reasons
** student are expected to eat lunch in between events
***Please be aware, the contest may run longer than most as there are more components and normally many contestants.
Contest Rules:
Absolutely no electronic devices are allowed during the contest. Please store them in your bags or give them to your advisor
Students should bring a clipboard and two No. 2 pencils and if desired a basic calculator (no graphing calculators)
Each School is allowed four contestants with all four scores being totaled to make up the team score.
Official Dress is recommended including boots
Dress in layers and for all types of weather. Suggested to bring a cushion to sit on as bleachers are cold and uncomfortable.
Any student suspected of cheating in any way will be disqualified from the contest.
Students should bring a lunch and water/beverage
Components of the contest:
Identification/Knowledge - (100 points) students will be tested on the topics below:
2025 - Health and Disease Management (Chapters 14 & 15, plus extra materials posted on the website)
2026 - History, Breeds and Characteristics
2027 - Genetics and Reproduction
2028 - Anatomy and Physiology
Practical Application - (25 points each contestant, 100 total) students will answer questions and gather information and use hands - on applications.
2025 - Clinical Skills and Practical Health Management
Examples: Equine First Aid, Dental Exam/Floating, Wound Cleaning/Dressing, Administering Oral Medications, Administering IM injections, IV Blood Draw, Applying Polo Wraps, Applying Standing Wraps, Basic Vital Signs assessment, Hoof Picking/Abscess Care, Lameness Evaluation
Oral reasons - (100 points) students will present oral reasons defending their placings 1 halter class and 1 under saddle class
Judging classes - (200 points) - 2 in hand/halter and 2 under saddle ( selection from western pleasure, ranch riding, western riding English pleasure, hunter under saddle, hunter hack, Hunt Seat Equitation, trail, breeds will be stock horses, Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Morgan, Paint, Arabian, conformation hunter
Team scenario and presentation (50 points) all team members will work together to complete the problem solving portion found in the scenario. (15 minutes total - NO PRESENTATION)
2025 - Critical Thinking in Equine Health: A Diagnostic & Care Scenario
Example diseases/issues to know: Colic, Moldy Hay Toxicosis, Strangles, Sinus Infection, Pneumonia, Dental Abscess, Tooth Root Infection, Choke, Dental Malformation and Malocclusion.
