The Center for Public Humanities at CSUN was founded in 2019 by Danielle Spratt (Department of English) in collaboration with over 50 affiliated faculty from across the College of Humanities.
For the Spring 2023 semester, Danielle Spratt, Heidi Schumacher (Department of Gender and Women's Studies and Queer Studies), and Melisa Galván (Department of Chicana/o Studies) serve as CPH co-organizers, thanks to the CSUN College of Humanities Innovation Fund.
With more than fifty affiliated humanities faculty, the CSUN Center for Public Humanities serves as a hub for the engaged public work of our humanities faculty, students, and staff and amplifies this work to better serve our students and the broader Los Angeles community. The central mission of the CPH is to encourage community based research and project-based, experiential learning opportunities and to carry out cross-departmental public projects and events, all of which involve sustained partnerships with community colleges, nonprofits, and libraries across LA.
These community and project-based learning activities 1) improve outcomes for faculty and students; 2) actively innovate and decolonize the humanities curriculum; and 3) help faculty and students serve the communities they call home, showing the enduring relevance of the humanities in our lives.
