Program History
The 1991–92 season marked the inaugural year for the Clayton State College Women’s Basketball Team. The Lady Lakers opened their first season with an exhibition game on November 18 against the Soviet National Team as part of a doubleheader. Throughout that inaugural season, the team led District 25 in both scoring defense (62.3 ppg) and defensive field goal percentage (.397%).
On March 25, 2011, the Women’s Basketball Team secured Clayton State’s first NCAA Division II National Championship—also the first in the history of the entire athletics program—with a decisive 69–50 victory over Michigan Tech in St. Joseph, Missouri. Since then, the Lady Lakers have continued to build on Clayton State’s championship legacy, amassing 17 championships, including the only NCAA Division II title ever claimed by a team in the Southeast Region.
