FAQs

Can anyone take the CSS training course?

No. These programs are designed for, and reserved for, those members of the Jewish community who will be actively participating in the Community Security Program. New program applicants are screened by various methods, prior to acceptance, and CSS reserves the right to independently decide who may, or may not, be accepted into the program.

Additionally those who do receive training, are expected to participate in their local security program. This is why donors have provided the funding for these programs. There are many roles in security, and young or old, week or strong, there is a position that suits everyone. For those who have no interest in aiding in the security of the community, this program may not be right for you.

How much does the training cost me?

You? Nothing! Running CSS and hosting all of these training programs, in addition to the other resources provided by CSS, is expensive. Other organizations charge hundreds or thousands of dollars for their programs. Thankfully CSS has had a constant flow of individual donors and Jewish philanthropists that have allowed CSS to grow, without charging for their services. As the demand for CSS continues to grow, we are in need of additional resources. While we still refuse to charge for our training, if you or someone you know would like to support CSS, we would be honored to accept any donation, large or small.

What if I am unable to attend all of the course dates? Can I take part of it? Are there Makeup dates?

Complete attendance at all course dates, and full participation in all exercises and activities of the course are required. Please understand that our instructors are volunteers as well. They give up hours of their time preparing and teaching these programs. It is unfair to ask them to give more, because one person missed a session. This is why the dates are all announced prior to registration, and why the registration forms asks you to confirm that you are aware of the dates and are available. Don't worry, We have been doing this for a long time, We have trained thousands of Jews in America, and nearly 400 in SoCal, in the last 2 years, already. If these dates don't work for you, there will be another course coming up soon. We do ask that you find a program that you know you can fully attend. Thank you. for your understanding.

I have been through other training programs before, Is this for me?

The CSS Training program is very unique. Many of our graduates have had training from Law Enforcement, US and/or Israeli Military, Private training centers etc.. We are often asked by these people if they NEED to take the CSS courses to participate and the short answer is YES!

Not only has every one of them realized that the CSS training provided them knowledge and skill setts that were very different from the other programs, but also understood that to be part of a team, everyone needs to have the same playbook. If you have training from elsewhere, We are certain that you will enjoy our program even more, open your mind and take in the new parts of what CSS can add for you.

Where are the training classes held?

The locations vary and rotate around the area for many reasons. The majority of courses will usually be in the Pico-Robertson area of LA & BH. Courses have been taught in the south bay, Northern and Southern Valley, as well as the LA Brea part of town. The exact location is provided to all registered attendees with in 24 hours prior to the start the first session.

Are the classes always on the same day? Same time?

No, the day of the week changes from class to class, although we have found that certain days are better or worse for most people. On the same thread, we have found that evening classes work best for the instructors and the students. Since CSS is focused on training community members who volunteer, and not staff, it is unlikely that we would ever offer a course during normal working hours.

Is this course just for younger people? Is there an age minimum?

The minimum age for participation is 18. There is no upper age limit. While many see security as a bouncer type roll, we have a very different take on it. There are many roles in a security setup, if are willing to use your skills and be a part of the team, we want you in the class. For our Level 2 program and certain other physical programs, that we may offer, those who are frail, have injuries they are recovering from or have certain medical limitations, should avoid those physical aspects of the course. You may speak with one of the instructors, if you have specific questions, and you should always follow the advice of your healthcare professional.

Can women take the course?

CAN WOMEN? Women should definitely be a part of CSS. Studies show that women are much more observant than men, when it comes to spotting suspicious behavior. CSS does not discriminate against either gender, and all CSS courses are open to both.

I might have some "issues" on my background check, is that an Issue?

It might be. As a security organization we are conscious of the trust that is put in our hands. All new program applicants are screened using a number of methods. If you have an arrest, conviction, ethical dismal or other item that may come up in a search, the best thing to do, is to get ahead of it. Contact your Regional CSS Manager and review any potential issues, prior to enrolling in a course. Each issue is handled in a confidential manner and on a case by case basis. It may be that we are not able to move ahead at this time, however, it may be that the circumstances around your case allow us to move ahead. Don't rush to any assumptions before speaking with a Sr CSS professional. Failure to disclose any negative records that may arise in your background check, or that occur while you are active with CSS, is grounds for immediate removal from the program.

Do you have to be orthodox to participate with CSS?

CSS prides itself on being an apolitical and non denominational Jewish organization. our members are representative of all factions of the Jewish world from ultra orthodox to atheist and all the in between. We only ask that you are passionate about being Jewish and protecting the Jewish way of life. While there are no requirements on any levels of personal observance, CSS does have a Shabbat protocol that must be adhered to by all members, while on duty. These restriction and exceptions to normal Shabbat and Holiday observance have been written and approved by Rabbis, and are essential to allowing those who do observe an Orthodox Sabbath, to posses certain normally prohibited items while on duty. As an Am Echad (unified people) we all follow the practices outlined in the sabbath protocol, out of respect for our fellow team mates.

My Shul/Synagogue does not have a CSS Agreement, can I still take the classes and participate?

It depends, in the last year, since Pittsburgh, most CSS Regions opened their training programs to the entire community. This was done to share critical knowledge with as many Jewish communities as possible. For many practical reasons, we encourage any Jewish institution that wants to have their members trained BY CSS, to have a CSS Membership. While this creates a symbiotic relationship that benefits both organizations, you being a part of a CSS Team at your Shul, is not a requirement. You being an active member of a CSS team and using the knowledge to serve the community is.

I am employed as a guard for a Jewish Institution, may I take the CSS Training?

The short answer is no. Sorry, this program is designed specifically for those members of the community who would be volunteering their time for the protection of the community. If you are part of a PPO or other Agency that works with CSS on a regular basis, we can offer a different program to you. Please email db@thecss.org for more information, and thank you for being a part of our protection detail.
