Thanks to a generous grant from the Academic Data Science Alliance, Emory University (with Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia) will host:
Training and a datathon for an interdisciplinary group of scholars from Emory, UGA, Tech and GSU (graduate student, postdoc or faculty), including:
A Software Carpentry workshop for those new to programing in Python
A 3-day Text-as-Data and Images-as-Data workshop for social sciences (lecture in the morning, drop-in coding lab in the afternoon).
A 2-day datathon for social science workshop attendees and computer scientists to begin building collaborative partnerships.
The Carpentry training + workshop will be virtual and free to all participants.
Participants in the datathon may submit a request for $1k of seed funds and a mentor to continue their project; we will award five $1k mini-grants to teams from the datathon to continue their work. We hope this will form the foundation of a longer-term working group.
After eight months of mentorship, seed funds winners will have a chance to present at a one-day workshop and get formal feedback from project leads and the advisory board.
The Carpentry workshop is optional, but to participate in parts 2 or 3, you must attend the workshop/datathon. We actively seek and welcome scholars from underrepresented backgrounds. To apply, please fill out this form by 1 May 2021. We hope to take anyone who is interested.
