We "kicked off" 2025 conferences with an early-career lunch event in ECC 2025 Thessaloniki, where we talked about what “open source” means in control research, why companies hesitate, security of open projects, transparency and reproducibility, and much more with outstanding experts Timm Faulwasser (TU Hamburg), Victor Magron (CNRS, LAAS), and Michelle Chong (TU Eindhoven).
The inaugural year of CSS NextCom is summarized in the paper "From the Ground Up: IEEE NextCom’s Inaugural Year of Impact and Growth" published in the IEEE Control Systems Magazine in May 2025. All of 2024 was a vibrant, enriching year full of news and events, are we are looking forward to grow even more in activities and participants in the next future!
With increasing interest in CSS NextCom, in CDC 2024 Milan we were pleased to host no less than three events: an early-career lunch with more than 160 young researchers, a breakfast session to get more information about roles and open positions, and the once-in-a-lifetime experience to visit The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci in person.
In ACC 2024, we organized two events: an early career welcome breakfast that kicked off the conference experience (with more than 100 attendees!) and a lake cruise in the evening that revealed the beauty of Toronto. We commit to organizing fun and inspiring events that make each conference memorable.
Our first NextCom event in ECC was held in ECC 2024 Stockholm, around 60 participants gathered in the F1 Auditorium at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, during ECC 2024, had a fun controls-themed charades game to break the ice! NextCom has more than 10 new members by this event and more new friends are coming!
The paper titled "Empowering the Next Generation of CSS Leaders: From NextCom to ExCom" was published in IEEE Control Systems Magazine Volume 44, Issue 3 in June 2024. The paper declares the goals of CSS NextCom, along with the logo and initial leadership teams. The paper also sends out the message to Students and Early Career Researchers, inviting them to participate in the exciting activities organized by NextCom at upcoming control conferences and to follow our social media platforms.
The CSS NextCom committee was formed in a breakfast organized by Philip E. Paré (Phil) at CDC 2023 and supported by the CSS Executive Committee.
