SEPTIC/RURAL ⇨ GROUNDWATER
What’s the Story?
Gurgle, munch, float, sink, squeeze, oh my! When water leaves a septic system in a rural location, the next step is the leaching field where water is distributed into the soil through a network of long pipes with small holes that allow the water to gradually seep back into the ground, using gravity to move it along. Since the leach field is close to the surface (but deep enough that evaporation is not a factor), nearly all of the water will go into the ground if the system is designed and working properly. When a septic system is maintained and functioning well, this water can be fairly clean; however, improperly maintained and aged or broken systems can be a source of groundwater pollution.
