CSO ⇨ RIVER/STREAM

What’s the Story?

Wait just a minute… This isn’t cleaned up yet! Bypassing the sewage treatment plant… overflowing the sewer system??! When there is a big rainstorm, too much water can flood the sewage system, causing stormwater and wastewater to mix and overflow (CSO = combined sewage overflow). This means untreated, raw sewage can be part of flood waters in an urban area (gross!), causing pollution and water contamination. No fun swimming at the beach!! This type of pollution can cause harmful algal blooms, hurting wildlife and making recreation unsafe as the water flows out into the river.
