The UN's 6th goal of clean water & sanitation will help billions globally if achieved. Every year, over 3 million people globally die from water-related diseases, and a majority of these deaths come from children. Children are typically susceptible to dying from these diseases because their immune system is not as strong as adults.
Not only will this goal help save millions from death, but it will help billions of people who must find other means to get access to clean water to instead economically participate and earn money for themselves and their families. This goal is the key to increasing economic productivity, education, and health globally.
The UN has split this goal into 6 sub-goals, each of which will help to create clean water and sanitation globally. It is important that communities each participate in ensuring the safety of their area's water sanitation process. Protecting the water quality of bodies of water nearby in turn helps provide communities with a source of clean water. The UN's 14th goal to protect marine ecosystems is also important in achieving the 6th goal.
