For this project, I researched different types of cybersecurity attacks in the news. I also had to evaluate my sources to ensure they were reputable and had all proper citation requirements. I also earned a certificate after taking a cyber course.

In April 2025, the clothing and food store Marks & Spencer (M&S) was attacked by a ransomware group called Scattered Spider. The hackers got into M&S’s systems months earlier and stole important files, including passwords. They then locked up the company’s systems with ransomware, causing problems with online orders and store payments. To help prevent this, companies should use strong passwords, update their software often, and turn on extra login security like two-factor authentication.

This news report says that malware has stolen around 1.7 billion passwords and posted them on the dark web. This means people’s accounts for emails, banking, and more could be at risk. To stay safe, people should make strong, different passwords for each site, use a password manager, and turn on two-factor authentication when possible.
