Mission Statement:
The Center School Gazette is committed to creating a space that encourages conversation and provides information to and among the Center School community. We strive to provide our readers with fair and true news concerning but not limited to the events happening in the school, current events that affect us as young learners, and students' interests whether that be art, sports, or pop culture. We are divided into four distinct sections: news, opinions, features, and entertainment. The Center School Gazette also works to support the students above all else, fostering a place where ideas, opinion, writing, art and self expression are welcome and encouraged. We have a responsibility to serve the Center School Community without showing bias to any group, activity, or person and to represent a diverse group of students, voices, and perspectives existing in The Center School.
The Center School Gazette abides by the standards of journalistic integrity. Following the Code of Ethics is vital to the work of the newspaper and staff members.
Integrity
Integrity applies to both reporting and being a member of the Center School Gazette Community. Members are expected to show up to meetings, participate, and help foster an inclusive environment. When writing, Gazette members should be fair and must present all sides to a story by gathering information from a wide range of sources in order to be intellectually honest and adhere to the standards of journalistic integrity.
Responsibility
All journalists must be fair, impartial, and responsible for their work. All articles should contain verified, accurate information at the time of publication. Staff members must report and write honestly, without bias and relaying the opinions of the sources unless writing an opinion, commentary, or review. Members of the staff should handle controversial subjects dispassionately but with due care.
Inclusivity
The Center School Gazette strives to embody inclusiveness among staff and in our publication. This includes having a diverse body of reporters, and by creating a safe environment to share and brainstorm ideas. Reporting should be done with respect. Staff must be careful to avoid stereotyping members of the community by gender identity, sex, age, religion, physical appearance, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, social status, mental or physical handicaps, etc.
Conflict of interest
Gazette members should try to avoid writing about students, activities and organizations that they are closely associated with. Gazette members act independently from other organizations that they may be obliged. In addition, staff members should avoid quoting or members of staff. Gazette members make sure that they do not express their opinion in articles except those that are contained in the Opinions section or expressed as columns or commentary in other sections.
