3 Principles:
The main focal points of the animation (e.g. the cannon, ring, canyon) are sequentially introduced via staging choices in order to create a dramatic effect. One thing is focused on at a time throughout the animation, I tried to ensure that the staging was not too overwhelming for the viewer.
The ball deforms while undergoing acceleration. In addition the cannon deforms as well right before firing (which could also be anticipation).
The ball's deformation is heavily exaggerated in certain instances to enhance the perception of high speed, as well as to make its autonomous movements more believable.
Inspiration:
The scene was loosely inspired by the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho. This bridge spans the Snake River which was notably attempted to be jumped over by famous stunt performer Evel Kenievel. The original stunt was performed via rocket, and ended in failure, whereas my animation features a cannon, and ultimately results in success. Here's a picture of the Perrine Bridge:
