Problem

Students living in the University of Rochester community love to go to events around them. However, there is only one central portal through which students can mostly be made aware of events happening on or off campus - the notice boards. Unfortunately, these notice boards get so choked with posters and flyers to the point where it is uneasy to look on the board for events. Students waste time in finding their interested activities and adding the detailed information to their schedule. Also, event organisers have to invest into other ways to make their events known around campus which is normally through word-of-mouth advertising and bulk email sending. Unfortunately, these two media do not guarantee that these events are advertised to a wider audience.

Solution

We will be the one stop shop for events. Our solution is to create an App for students to discover all campus events in one place. All events will be in one place and it will be easier for students to know what’s going on around them. We hope to help people keep track of all of the events near them; help event organizers like the president or e-board members of an organization better advertise their events to specific audiences.

We will focus on two parts: scanning posters to add event information and event database processing. By taking a picture of the event poster, students can easily obtain time, location, and other information of an event and add it to their calendar. Our app is mainly developed for the most basic posters, which only include clear information such as name, time and place. It uses string matching and regular expressions to retrieve the information we need. The information entered in the calendar is in the form of pending delete, so that users can modify it according to personal preference when using the calendar.

For online events, there is a database to store the time and place of the event. The events are pushed directly to the app. Users can register for the event by clicking the “Join” button. The technologies required for this will be a full stack web and mobile application that will consist of both front end and back end functionality. We can create a mobile application for Android app stores that can be downloaded by users.

We will start at the University of Rochester and expand to other cities from there which will allow our users to be informed about even more events. People can be informed about relevant events that are happening around them. This will reduce the amount of useless events to look through. In addition to that, we provide notifications to inform and remind our users about events nearby so they will not miss an opportunity to have fun. Users will be informed about relevant events happening around them in an orderly and timely way.
