Campus Sexual Assault Response

Have you been contacted by NORC?

NORC is reaching out to people to participate in this important study. Please review the frequently asked questions below or contact the CSAR project at CSAR@norc.uchicago.org or 877-888-2044 if you would like more information.

What is NORC?

How long will the survey take?

Why should I complete the survey?

The survey consist of two modules. Each module will take roughly 20 minutes to complete depending on your knowledge and whether you have to look up information or enlist the help of others.

Affiliated with the University of Chicago, NORC is a not-for-profit social science research organization that conducts studies in the public interest.

Who should complete the survey?

This will depend on the organizational structure of your institution. We believe the Title IX coordinator is a good place to start due to their knowledge of and relationships with human resources, general counsel, public safety, student affairs, etc.

What questions will you ask?

Approximately half the questions ask for specific information; the remainder of the questions are a matter of perception. Having key information at hand will help the flow of the survey. Click here for a brief overview of the content of each module to help determine whether you will need to consult others in order to complete the survey.

Why should I complete the survey?

Preparedness for trauma-informed responses to sexual assault is not advanced universally across U.S. institutions of higher education. The long-term goal of this study is to support the development of policies, protocols, trainings, and interventions to strengthen trauma-informed responses to sexual assault by campus public safety agencies in partnership with campus health and wellness centers, as well as with local partners, i.e., law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and health and victim service providers. To achieve this goal, we are collecting nationally representative survey and local qualitative data on campuses’ public safety and health center approaches to sexual assault within the college or university community. This is a much needed, first-of-its-kind study.

With this research, we will ascertain the state of campus preparedness and campus responses to sexual assaults. This research is designed to identify promising approaches and service gaps, and to translate and disseminate this data for practitioners. In addition to scholarly publications, our partners — the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) — will disseminate study results and recommendations through established and dedicated communication channels. Further, IACLEA and ACHA will use the project results to refine best practice guidelines and accreditation standards.

Can I start the survey and come back to it later? Can someone else finish for me?

Absolutely! You can break-off at any time. The survey will resume where you left off for either yourself or a colleague to complete.

Where can I find my PIN? Is it unique to me or my institution?

Your institution’s PIN was included in the email inviting you to participate. The PIN is connected to your institution, not you personally, so anyone at your college or university can use it to log-in and complete the survey modules. If you no longer have the email send a message to CSAR@norc.uchicago.edu and we will resend the information. You can also call 877-888-2044.

Who is sponsoring the study?

The National Institute of Justice, the research and evaluation arm of the Department of Justice.

Do I have to participate?

While participation is voluntary, your school cannot be replaced in the study, making your contribution vital to its success. If you are not able to complete the survey but know someone at your institution who can, please forward them the log-in information or email their contact information to CSAR@norc.uchicago.edu and we will reach out to them directly.
