Introduction:

  • Augmented Reality(AR) is the integration of computer generated image and the reality. This technology allows a user to interact with the real world and a computerized world simultaneously. AR can be used for many different applications. In my opinion, the best way this technology can be utilized is by integrating the real world with information that will be augmented next to a real world object. For example, lift up an apple and the nutritional information is displayed next to it in AR. This project explores the different possibilities of an augmented reality.

Description:

  • For this project, two people worked together. The first step of this project was designing the VR setting by sketching it by hand on paper. We decided to make the theme bodybuilding. This meant that everything in the scene would have things such as dumbbells, protein, and muscular people.
  • Since, this was a group of two, we doubled everything. We had two place mats objects, two cylinder objects, and two multi-image targets. completing the requirements to get a C for this assignment was simple. However, getting a B became somewhat of a challenge when having to create a button for the magazine.
  • To use this application simply run the executable. Once you do that, point your camera towards the objects and see the augmented reality that appears before you. A couple of things that you can do is pick up the targets and spin them around to get all the information on the labels. When interacting with the magazines, you can see an image spinning

For this assignment, we built an Augmented Reality application focusing on what a breakfast table environment might look like in an augmented world. Our theme for our project was The Gym. We made use of every image target provided; the placemat was used as a mat for a protein cereal bowl as well as another placemat for a deadlift mat. This technology could be used in many different situations.

One thing our application could be used for is a new gym owner, or an owner trying to change his business. For instance, a new gym owner might use these and wear the AR glasses to help him or her simulate possibilities for a breakfast lounge they may want in his or her gym. The new gym owner can walk around the augmented world and interact with the virtual objects in his or her surroundings. This will provide the new gym owner more details and better feel for what he or she might invest in. This way, there is less of a chance for an error and there is less of a chance he or she will regret the decision, as they are able to see ahead of time what the potential of the lounge they planned out is. This can also apply to the entire gym itself! With this technology, and equipped with augmented reality glasses, the architecture of their gym can be viewed as well! The new gym owner can see different “realities” (possibilities) of where the equipment, locker rooms, and other major components of the gym can be laid out before everything is constructed.

In the case of the seasoned gym owner trying to change his or her business, augmented reality can help them by also helping them visualize new changes they can add to the gym so they can be sure the result is what him or her want. The augmented world will provide a better, detailed blueprint of what is possible, and with that, a seasoned gym owner can make his or her business decisions that way

But why limit this application to just gyms? Or breakfast lounges? The possibilities of this kind of technologies are endless. The capabilities and features of our application have shown us more of the potential of augmented reality. If this technology was implemented into typical augmented reality glasses, this could provide many benefits to many business owners and even ordinary people. For example, a business owner, architects, or even construction workers, can plan and map out their blueprints for their ideas and use the augmented reality glasses to test it out. This could provide not only efficiency, but also safety. By participating in many-augmented reality driven simulations, new, more impactful ideas can be created, and it could also cause less casualties. Police and the military can use augmented reality to train themselves in a virtual world, as it would be the closest they could get to the actual experience. Professional athletes could go through a bunch of augmented reality drills and further improve their performance in their real games. Ordinary citizens can use this kind of application for many things. In the case of our application, they can use it for remodeling of their own homes. A man trying to renovate his basement can go though the augmented reality application and explore different options of what his basement might properly look like.
