As a panelist in the Workshop on "4th CoDRR: Strategies for GLOF Risk Reduction," I had the opportunity to engage with top officials of various Government (GoI) organizations dedicated to addressing the growing threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The discussions were insightful and forward-thinking, focusing on innovative strategies for risk reduction, early warning systems, and community preparedness. It was a great experience to contribute to the dialogue on improving resilience in vulnerable regions. The workshop highlighted the urgency and commitment to tackling this critical issue in GLOF risk reduction. This is a kickstart of GLOF DRR in India. Thank you, NDMA for this opportunity.
🌊🌊Addressing GLOF hazard and risks🌊🌊🌊
The Himalaya is at risk from Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), emphasizing the need for innovative, science-driven solutions to build resilience among mountain communities. Through the
#SCAHimalayas project under the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Switzerland and India are working together to improve hazard and risk assessments and develop effective GLOF mitigation strategies.
A recent Technical Workshop on GLOF Hazard & Risk Assessment in New Delhi brought together experts from Switzerland 🇨🇭 and India 🇮🇳 for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaboration to enhance GLOF resilience.
Inaugural speech by Safi Ahsan Rizvi , Advisor NDMA
I am happy to be involved in GLOF hazard assessment (Case studies) of the two hazardous lakes in Sikkim -Shako Cho & South Lhonak glacial lakes. Special thanks to Holger Frey and Simon Allen and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation for this opportunity.
Let us be commited towards addressing GLOF hazard and risk.
