There have been previous Fabian Local Societies in our area such as Sutton Fabians and Sutton and Epsom Fabians in the late 1960's and early 1970's and members in one or two of the Labour CLPs in our area participated in the long-running North-West Surrey Fabians for many years as is shown in this local Labour CLP history here. We would welcome more information on past local societies to add to this history and Central London Fabians are also researching the history of local societies.
Croydon and Sutton Fabians were established in 2015 and fully operated until 2020 holding meetings at Ruskin House, Croydon and in Sutton. From 2017 to 2020, the politically pioneering Emily Brothers was our Secretary before she moved to the Isle of Wight and during her term of office with us was elected as a Local Societies Rep on the national Fabian Society Executive Committee. In 2020 we suspended activity during the Covid lockdown, but we are now re-established and at present are meeting on Zoom.
We currently have 150 members many of whom are involved in public policy decision making and in local community groups. Whilst we are called Croydon and Sutton Fabians we do actually cover a slightly wider area of South London and have members in the Merton and Bromley areas too and welcome their connection with our Local Society.
Members who join us accept the overall aims of the Society that are set out in its rule book and which say:
The Fabian Society is a socialist organisation which aims to promote:
greater equality of power, wealth and opportunity
the value of collective action and public service
an accountable, tolerant and active democracy
citizenship, liberty and human rights
sustainable development
multilateral international cooperation
Our aim is to hold from twice-yearly to quarterly Zoom meetings as it is easier to attract speakers. If the nature of the speaker justified it we would hold a physical meeting at Ruskin House Croydon or in Sutton.
We will also recommend books and pamphlets to read that will often tie in to the speakers who attend our meetings.
Our aim is to encourage local policy debate so those in power locally and nationally can make better informed public policy decisions.
