A croquet set is one way to get the equipment together. The quality of the set should be as good as you want to spend. The quality will be most noticable in the weight of the balls. Nine ounces are best for kids. 12oz and 16 oz balls are best for the game. Experts should use 16 ozs. In general heavier balls are better if you keep the grass longer.
Markers e.g. plastic flags, are best acquired through Amazon. Garden plant markers obtained via a garden centre is another alternative. Bear in mind, if your croquet set already has four markers, then you will need another eight. Otherwise twelve will be needed.
As a further alternative you could use short pieces of a wooden dowel and paint them white. Make sure if you make up markers yourself, you do not allow them to become trip hazards or an unforgiving hard object, if a player slips and falls.
The flags give a bold outline to the court. Garden Plant markers are much more subtle. You can create a hole for them by using a scewdriver.
This will not only help you set the hoops the right distance apart, it will also help you find the hoop holes again after you have mown the lawn
