Filled with thick smog, Delhi was the second most polluted city in the world on that day, behind Lahore in Pakistan, according to air quality monitoring group IQAir. It was the most polluted of the five days Delhi hosted World Cup matches this season.

In an effort to reduce pollutants, the Indian cricket board banned fireworks in post-match celebrations, while the local government took measures including banning some diesel vehicles and construction, and using water sprinklers.

Air pollution from bushfires in Australia led to a cricket match in the capital Canberra being abandoned and a tennis player was forced to quit a match after collapsing with a coughing fit. Smoke from bushfires has also affected events in the United States.

The International Cricket Council, the global governing body of cricket, does not have specific guidelines to deal with air pollution. It treats pollution similar to other weather events, allowing umpires to call a game off if they agree the conditions are not conducive.

While Delhi is among the worst affected cities, much of the Indian subcontinent suffers from poor air quality, which has affected previous cricket World Cup matches held there. According to a Reuters analysis of satellite-based atmospheric data, air quality during cricket World Cup matches held in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have been worse compared to other venues in previous tournaments.

Some formats of cricket have among the longest playing times in sports, with one-day matches running as long as eight to nine hours while test matches can take up to five consecutive days, exposing players to polluted air for prolonged periods.

The event will start off with a repeat of the 2019 final between England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket stadium in the world. With a capacity of 110,000 spectators, the stadium is located in the city of Ahmedabad in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The travel industry is benefiting from the cricket fever. Accommodation searches in host cities for match days have, on average, grown by 237% over the past year. The much-awaited India vs. Pakistan match and the World Cup Finals are to be held in Ahmedabad. As a result, the city has emerged as the frontrunner, with a 1,702% surge in stay searches.

The lure of seeing top cricketing nations out on the field during the Cricket World Cup later this year is proving to be a powerful motivator, triggering a travel boom in India. Hosting the Cricket World Cup is a great opportunity for India to showcase its hospitality, culture, and ability to successfully host global events. For Indian travelers, this tournament might be a stepping stone to attending more sporting events in foreign countries in the years to come, as international travel becomes more attainable for the Indian masses.

"There's now opportunities for men, women, kids... people above 40, even people above 50, people above 60, there are opportunities for them to play" said Kartik Shah, founder and director of the Greater Boston Cricket Foundation. "As more opportunities come about, you see more and more people trying to play the game that are immigrants here from all over the world. And cricket is played all over the world. And all of these people now have a chance to play different versions, different styles, different formats."

Plans call for a 34,000-seat temporary stadium to make New York the host of the 2024 Cricket World Cup at the home of the largest cricket league in New York -- Van Cortlandt Park. While the stadium will only be up until June, it will eliminate the use of 20 acres of the park for months.

The highlights this week: The Pakistani cricket team visits India in a rare bilateral achievement, a terrorist attack in Baluchistan with troubling implications, a pro-China candidate wins the Maldives election, and more.

But labelling South Africa as the only team that chokes in cricket world cups is unfair. Since 1992, England, despite winning in 2019, had only reached the semi-finals once before that. And their performance this year displayed several instances of underperforming on the big stage. New Zealand, who played in six of the eight World Cup semi-finals since 1992, have never won the tournament.

Although there are barriers for the progression of cricketers and the country is still far away from truly transforming the sport, a lot of work has been done by Cricket South Africa at all levels. These successes are often not publicised. For example, about 60 Hub and Regional Performance Centres have been established across the country. These academy-like programmes aim to develop talent from previously disadvantaged communities by providing coaching, mentorship, transport, high level matches and opportunities.

Early diversification: Recent analysis suggests that world-class athletes engage in a range of physical and sport activities during their early years. This helps develop different muscle groups, movement patterns and anticipation skills. It prevents boredom and reduces the risk of overuse injuries. So playing many different kinds of sports is a benefit.

We've had thrills and spills over the past few weeks, and there's plenty more cricket to come over the next couple of months, with Test blogs, the Big Bash League and more across the ABC Sport website and radio.

I was watching todays cricket match on the main events UHD channel. Then mid-way through the match football took over the main events UHD channel and I was not able to find where cricket moved to (in UHD). I continued watching it on Sky Sport Cricket HD, but does coverage from main events UHD channel move to a different UHD channel when a different event starts on the main event channel or that event is no longer showed in UHD once the move happens? Any inputs?

At lunchtime one is carrying the SPFL match when 401 is carrying the EPL match. Sky could put the UHD coverage of the cricket behind the red button on 405 if they wanted. However today is very busy with two major football games and a Qatar F1 GP so I suspect that the cricket got dropped. The capacity constraint is not likely within the Stream/Glass platform but the limited number of UHD satellite transponders for Sky Q customers.

Ok I understand. So the cricket coverage just moved to the cricket HD channel that I am aware of. It did not moved to a different UHD channel that I was not aware of. Btw, how many UHD channels does sky have - Main event UHD and F1 UHD. 2, Right?

@Nigelb1972 UHD events can be broadcast in UHD without being on the main event channel. This happens on a regular basis. Happened on Friday with the WSL being on main event in UHD and the Championship match being on sky football but also available via the spare linear UHD channels and red button. Something can only be broadcast in UHD if it is filmed in UHD, I don't think the cricket World Cup is

@Chrisee @Hi. The reason that the cricket isn't on the UHD channels is that it isn't being broadcast in UHD. Sky are getting the feed from another broadcaster. My understanding is that Sky would only put native UHD on the UHD channels - however they will upscale Non UHD on the UHD main event channel.

@Jason+Golding you maybe right but I can nothing definitive either way to be honest. There are multiple outside producers producing UHD so it being a world feed doesn't mean its not in UHD by the way.
