Cond Nast Entertainment Executive Vice President Alexander Edgington stated that a show about cricket was viewed as an obvious option in its discussions with Netflix to create content targeting the Indian market. Edgington stated, "In India, cricket is absolutely part of everyone's DNA. The things that people are about in India are Bollywood and cricket. The challenge was to make it appeal to people who only have a little familiarity with the game, but also to appeal to Indian audiences who don't need it to be explained what a googly is." Edgington also stated that one of the reasons for selecting the Mumbai Indians as the focus of the series was because the team is owned by the Ambani family, and he felt that they would also attract interest from audiences.[3]

There is also too much impetus on the team's campaign itself, where they start out by losing 5 of the first 6 games before staging somewhat of a signature revival. It might have been more useful to delve deeper into the psychological state of perhaps just a few key characters instead of half-heartedly committing to the whole bunch. Retired Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene, now the Mumbai Indians' head coach, is ironically the only 'character' expressive enough to incite intrigue about the internal machinery of a significant sports tournament. Yet, the camera stops short of unravelling the man behind the manager, thus missing out on an opportunity to examine the mental constitution required by foreigners to traverse the highways of the two-month-long cricket carnival.

As Cricket Fever: Mumbai Indians is an Indian production, it is likely that the series would stay in India and provide a look at different aspects of the country's cricket culture. The eight episodes of the show's first season provide a fairly comprehensive look at the Mumbai Indians and the Indian Premier League, but that doesn't mean there aren't other aspects of the sport worth covering. From the fans who attend the events to the administrators who put those events together, a lot of money and effort goes into the IPL. In 2017, financial advisory firm Duff & Phelps reported that the value of the IPL rose to $5.3 billion dollars in 2017 from $4.2 billion the year before.

Cricket, being deeply ingrained in Indian culture, holds a special place in the hearts of Indians. With the upcoming cricket World Cup in India, 75% of travelers express their willingness to increase their travel budget to witness live cricket matches.

Online travel agency MakemyTrip has also extended an invitation to residents across prominent Indian cricket centers, urging them to list their properties on their platform. While there has been a steep increase in room prices in some other cities where cricket matches are being played, Bengaluru has not seen a significant increase mainly due to the presence of higher number of hotels across various price ranges, hoteliers noted.

One trend is blatantly obvious with the sport. The cricket pitch is the great equalizer. No matter how rich or connected one is, the only thing that matters on the field is the skill of the game. The former colonies started playing the game as a way to battle colonial oppression. Beating the British at their own game became a unifying force and these symbolic victories were a large factor in galvanizing populations of people toward demanding liberation. There were no conquerors and conquered on the field. There were only winners and losers and it meant everything to the people of former colonies to prove that regardless of politics, they were just as good, and in many cases better than the British, on the pitch.

There is no better example of cricket justice than what happened on June 23, 1971. The context of this event is crucial. Prior to this cricket match, India had been through significant hardship since its independence in 1947. The country immediately underwent multiple national partitions, inherited a shattered economy, extremely high rates of poverty and a lack of true unity under the new sovereign regime. India was also reeling from economic aftershocks as a result of the British flooding its markets with English made products during its colonial rule. The English systematically priced out native artisans and small business owners, creating an Indian economy dependent on British export. India, which was known as the crown jewel of the British Empire for its vast riches and raw resources had been transformed into a captive market.

It's easy, in the United States, to forget how popular cricket is elsewhere in the world, predominantly in the former British Empire, from the United Kingdom to the Caribbean, from South Africa to Sri Lanka to New Zealand. And there's one other country whose ardent embrace has made cricket and its IPL variant so massively popular, India.

There, one of the world's largest audiences will tune in later this month to watch the IPL, which brings together the world's best cricket players for a high-stakes, high-pressure tournament. The IPL features an abbreviated version of cricket, known as Twenty20, that can be played in a few hours, instead of traditional cricket's three- to five-day matches.

For Alexander Edgington, himself a British native and executive vice president of Cond Nast Entertainment Studios, a show about cricket was the obvious option when talking with Netflix about creating content for India, where the streaming giant hopes to drive its international growth.

And there is an American audience for cricket too, even if many of its adherents are expats from India or elsewhere. In Los Angeles, 20 teams take over a park in the San Fernando Valley every weekend, Edgington said. And New York state has as many as 30,000 players.

"We're very keen to expand our reach over there and deliver something that those 400 million middle-class people (in India) want," Edgington said. "Talking food, talking cricket, talking Bollywood, for Cond Nast, we have lot of (intellectual property) that would make a lot of sense there."
