England had been the best team in the tournament. Pakistan scraped through to the final. Pakistan batted first at the MCG in front of 95,000 spectators, in the first day/night final. He also admits that being pressured and cornered triggers his famously combative nature, and as the Test century drought dragged on for a further 10 months and his average during that time slipped to 23, calls for his removal grew more strident among media and some cricket circles.

A key point of difference between England and Australia's Test cricket philosophy had long been the former selected their best captain followed by a team for him to lead, whereas the latter proudly picked their best 11 players and identified a skipper from that group.

That narrative gained further currency when Australia obliterated Nasser Hussain's England to retain the Ashes after barely 11 days of cricket across three Tests in late 2002, with Waugh contributing scores of 7, 12, 34 and 53 while heir-apparent Ponting averaged 87 from his four innings at number three.

IN 2013 A British businessman, Aidan Cooney, was preparing to sell his sports-data company, Opta, for a life-changing sum of money. Cooney had bought Opta in 2002 and positioned it at the forefront of an information revolution in football. He realised that there was more going on in a match than was captured by official statistics, so Opta began counting different types of action and analysing them. Then it started selling its findings to clubs and broadcasters who were hungry to understand the game at a deeper level. As he was preparing to hand over the firm, a couple of colleagues persuaded Cooney that there was an opportunity to do in cricket what Opta had achieved in football. Because cricket consists of a series of individual plays, it could be broken down and analysed more easily than football, they argued. Cooney agreed and in 2014 he launched a new company, named CricViz.

Another action-packed cricketing year nears its end another couple of hours. Team India did have their near misses in two heartbreaking finals - WTC and the ODI World Cup - which prolonged their wait for an ICC trophy since 2013, but the side also have their moment in the sun as well with the Asia Cup trophy haul. And before 2024 kicks off with lot of promise and hope, former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan picked their best performer from the Indian side in 2023 and the breakout star as well.

Shubman Gill was the common choice for the two as they revealed it during their conversation on Star Sports on Sunday. The youngster emerged as the leading run-getter in 2023, scoring 2154 runs in 48 matches across formats, laced with seven boundaries and 10 fifties. 1584 of those runs were scored in ODI cricket where he averaged 63.36 in 29 games, hitting five hundreds, including a double ton, and and nine fifties.

Gavaskar and Pathan were also given the task of picking the best performer from 2023 and both named Gill, yet again, alongside Mohammed Shami, who produced a stellar show in the World Cup, picking 24 wickets in seven innings, the most by a player in the tournament, with record three five-wicket hauls.

However, as his career went on, he became one of the best all-rounders the game has ever witnessed. Imran formed a golden era for all-rounders in the 1980s, with cotemporaries Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee, and Ian Botham.

Yet, when he was at the fag end of his career in the 1992 World Cup, Imran was regarded as arguably the most inspiring captain and batted up the order for Pakistan. The Lahore-born cricketer was also the pioneer of reverse swing bowling, a weapon he instilled in Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, who mastered the art in the mid to late 1990s.

Imran Khan is among the few cricketers with a century and five-wicket haul in the same innings of a Test match, achieving the feat against India in 1983. During his illustrious career, the now 71-year-old won eight Player of the Series awards in Tests, which is fourth all-time.

Following a disappointing start to their campaign, losing three of their first four games with one washout, Pakistan needed to win their next three games to qualify for the final. However, despite most fans and experts writing off the Men in Green, Imran led one of the great comeback stories in cricket history.

And finally, in a storybook ending, Imran picked up the final wicket of Richard Illingworth to cap off one of the most memorable cricketing careers and winning Paksitan their solitary ODI World Cup trophy.

International cricket, much like life everywhere across the globe, came to a standstill in early 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic spread rapidly across different continents. Amid uncertain times when sporting events such as the Olympics were stuck in a limbo, England and Wales Cricket Board and West Indies Cricket Board put their resources together to bring back international cricket by arranging three-match Test series across two venues in July 2020.

Following the 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore, international teams were not in favour of visiting Pakistan and it took Lanka to reassure other nations to send their teams to the Asian country for international cricket. Pakistan, under the captaincy of Azhar Ali, clinched the series 1-0 with a 263-run victory in the second Test in Karachi. It was a positive result on the field, but hosting two matches meant a significant step for the Pakistan Cricket Board to bring international cricket back to the country.

After dominating test cricket in the previous years and winning the inaugural Cricket World Cup, West Indies entered the 1979 as favourite's and they lived up to the expectations. At the final, England's bowler restricted West Indies to 120-4 and were looking in danger. But Sir Vivian Richards stood up to the occasion and scored a brilliant 139 and took the game away from England. West Indies won the match by 92 runs and continued their dominance for another 6 years.

At the end of the first innings, West Indies bowled India for 183 and that target looked like a cakewalk for the calypso kings. At one stage, West Indies were 50-1 and were looking in-charge. However, Sir Vivian Richards skied a ball which was caught by the Indian captain Kapil Dev. After that, the West Indies batting attack fell like a pack of cards and India win their maiden World Cup and this victory began the rise and popularity of cricket in India.

At the final of the 1987 Cricket World Cup, England were cruising their way to their maiden World Cup win, batting at 135-2 chasing 254. Unfortunately, Mike Gatting played an irresponsible reverse sweep which knocked the top edge and was caught by the keeper. This triggered England's batting collapse and the inventors of cricket had to wait over 3 decades to win their first World Cup.

The 1999 semi-final between South Africa and Australia has been labelled as the "greatest ODI of all time". Chasing 213, South Africa needed 1 run in 14 balls and they had 1 wicket in hand. Lance Klusener ran a suicidal run and got run out as South Africa lost the match. This was the 4th semi-final for South Africa and they hadn't reached the finals of the World Cup. After this loss in the semi-final, South Africa were given the label 'chokers' but fans, pundits and cricketing experts.

This match is the perfect example of a David vs Goliath fight. England, one of the top nations in cricket, were set to face Ireland, an upcoming minnow. England set a huge total of 327 for Ireland to chase and the latter was reduced to 115-5. Kevin O'Brian batted out of his skin, scoring a brilliant 113 of 63 deliveries, guiding Ireland to score a huge upset over England.

Eoin Morgan changed and revolutionized white ball cricket in England and led England to their first World Cup victory. This was the best final in cricket history and perhaps the best match in cricket history.

"And then there are so many other cherished moments, like every match I have won for India, winning the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup, reaching the 2003 World Cup final, becoming No 1 in Tests so many of them," the ace spinner added.

"If you talk about Test cricket, then it is these five: The Kolkata and Chennai Tests against Australia in 2001; Sri Lanka, 2008; Jamaica 2006 and, of course, this year against South Africa in Kolkata."

Those witness to the series believe it was one of the best ever in the longer version of the game. Harbhajan, India's 'Turbanator', stamped his authority in some style, as he claimed 32 wickets. He was deservedly named the man of the series. e24fc04721
