Geometric and algebraic structures play an essential role in the formulation of physical laws and constitutive relations across a broad range of physical theories, including electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, and quantum mechanics. Numerical methods which preserve these structures at the discrete level are known to exhibit better consistency with conservation laws, symmetries, and long-term stability and thus tend to possess a stronger correspondence to the systems they approximate. These properties offer tangible benefits to high-impact applications such as fusion modelling; atmospheric and space physics; material synthesis; weather forecasting; and natural disaster preparedness. Structure preservation is becoming a powerful technique in data-driven methods for scientific machine learning and model discovery, where strong inductive biases can reduce data sample complexity, improve generalization, and promote physically consistent predictions. These developments are creating new opportunities across both numerical analysis and data-driven modelling by leveraging physical structure to improve the fidelity, efficiency, and robustness of computational methods.
This workshop will serve as a venue for both numerical analysts and application specialists to actualize these benefits and research opportunities by presenting on their work, networking with domain specialists, and participating in a series of informal discussions. Our goal is to enrich this research topic by facilitating collaborations on the development of new structure-preserving methods and their real-world applications.
This research workshop is a satellite meeting preceding the University of Victoria CAIMS meeting from June 1-5, 2027.
The University of Victoria (UVic) sits in Victoria, British Columbia's capital, at the southern end of Vancouver Island. It is a coastal city with a mild climate, an ocean shoreline, and easy access to beaches, parks, and hiking trails. The main campus is a short bus ride from downtown, on the boundary between the municipalities of Saanich and Oak Bay, and its green, walkable grounds include Finnerty Gardens and the wooded ravine at Mystic Vale. UVic has more than 22,000 students from over 100 countries and a strong reputation for research, hands-on learning, and sustainability. We hope the setting makes for a productive and enjoyable few days.
