Monday, Sept. 21st
We read, discussed, and viewed I.iv. and I.v. of Romeo and Juliet today. Hopefully, you wrote down the key lines from these two scenes as we went over them. At the end of class, we listed the literary devices we have discussed so far. We will continue with this and do some creative writing next class.
Thursday, Sept. 17th
After going over the basic PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE, and looking at an example of how to integrate supporting quotations, we finished our paragraphs on Romeo behaving like a courtly lover. We read and discussed I.ii.-iii., highlighting key lines and devices.

Tuesday, Sept. 15th
We went over the concept of COURTLY LOVE, and we did a review of key figures in CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY. Then we read and discussed the rest of I.i. from line 101 onwards. At the end of class, we started answering the question of how Romeo acts as a courtly lover in this scene. You should answer in COMPLETE SENTENCES and use SUPPORTING QUOTATIONS. I collected what you have written so far and will give you comments and suggestions. You will get another 15 minutes on Thursday to finish your response.
Please bring Romeo and Juliet with you to every class.
Friday, Sept. 11th
We made observations on the form and techniques used in the PROLOGUE (17). Then we read I.i.1-101 and discussed it. We watched and discussed Franco Zefferelli and Baz Luhrman's versions of the fight scene, and noted the CHARACTER FOILS in Tybalt and Benvolio. As an introduction to yet another foil, Romeo, we did a "psychology test" to figure out what kind of lover we might be. We will apply all this to Romeo next class.

Wednesday, Sept. 9th
After an introduction to the course (refer to the COURSE OUTLINE posted on Teams), we did a writing sample on two prompts which were worked into the introduction to Romeo and Juliet. We read and discussed the PROLOGUE to Act One, and signed up for parts in I.i.1-100 which we will read next class. If you signed up for a part, please read over your lines. If there are any questions or difficulties, please let me know on Friday.
