A: The answer is always back in the subjectmatter.
'Of any thing, ask, what is its nature?'
Marcus Aurelius
What is its Nature?
This question is the key to your success, and what will set you apart from graduates from most other institutions and will set you apart as a professional, artist and crafts person.
It is the question that will enable you to adapt and survive as a freelancer.
So let's see how it works.
Firstly, it requires that you don't make assumptions about ANYTHING.
Instead, you explore the elements that make up the 'thing', even if that 'thing' is very familiar to you.
List the elements, write them down, as bullet-points, as a mind-map, whatever works for you.
Task 1: Group
Duration: 5 mins
Consider a can of classic Coca~Cola.
As a group break it down into it's constituent parts.
List them.
Discuss.
Q:What is the connection between
'What is its nature' and your ME List?
A: Your ME List is helping you to understand your Nature.
Why is this important?
As we saw in the previous session...
Copy of 01 - Introduction to Personal Style
YOUR ME LIST = YOUR THEMES = YOUR STYLE
You can apply your style, or 'themes' to whatever creative challenge you are faced with...
The designer, Alexander McQueen* was influenced by movies.
Consider your favourite directors and the 'look' of their films, or the subject matter that they keep coming back to.
Can you identify running themes within their work?
Make a list of your observations, and create a section in your blog with illustrations, see the example below...
Example.
Ridley Scott:
'Diagetic' lighting (light that emits from and interacts with, the filmed environment), the use of elemental (reflective surfaces, reflections onto surfaces and textures) and atmospheric interventions and interactions with light (smoke, water, steam, dust).
Alien, 1979
Blade Runner, 1982
Black Rain, 1989
The key to creating original responses,
and to enjoying even subjects that you aren’t naturally drawn to,
is to consider both the NATURE of the subject matter
and your THEMES from your ME List
and use these two things to develop your response.
For example, say you are tasked with developing a concept for original Coca~Cola….
Task 3. Individual
Duration 30 mins. inc. Tea break
Take one of the THEMES from your ME List,
and one of the aspects that you identified in your breakdown of a can of Coca~Cola,
then see how you might approach communicating Coke’s USP as being ‘thirst quenching’,
from the perspective of your Theme.
Write a brief outline of your concept.
30 mins then we will Discuss.
You can use this approach to generate relevant and original ideas, in any creative situation.

McQueen, 2020
Mirroring the savage beauty, boldness and vivacity of his design, the film is an intimate revelation of McQueen’s own world, both tortured and inspired, which celebrates a radical and mesmerising genius of profound influence and is a thought-provoking fable about the price of global celebrity.
