1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how the unofficial Android application published under the display name “Creative Commons” (the “App”, Android package com.commencesappppp.apppp) handles information when you install or use it, including when advertisements are shown.

Please read this Policy together with the App’s Terms and Conditions. By using the App, you acknowledge this Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

This Policy applies only to this unofficial App. It does not govern creativecommons.org, api.openverse.org, Openverse websites, WordPress, Google Play, or any third-party website you open from a search result or an advertisement. Google’s own ads privacy policy applies to data Google processes for AdMob.

2. Unofficial status and who is responsible

The App is an independent education and discovery tool built by an independent developer. The App is not an official product of Creative Commons Corporation, Creative Commons, Openverse, WordPress, Automattic, or any related organization.

The developer who publishes this App on the relevant app store is solely responsible for the App and for the practices described in this Policy. Do not contact Creative Commons, Openverse, or WordPress about this unofficial App, its privacy practices, support, or data handling.

“Creative Commons,” CC license names, and related marks are trademarks or projects of Creative Commons. “Openverse” is a project associated with WordPress. Their use in the App is for identification and education only and does not imply any official relationship.

3. No account and no user profile

The App does not require an account, registration, email address, phone number, or password. The App does not create a user profile on a developer server.

The developer does not operate a sign-in service, cloud account, or remote user database for this App.

4. Information we do not collect

The App does not ask you for your name, postal address, government ID, payment card, or precise GPS location.

The App does not include Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, or a Facebook SDK. The App does include the Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) for banner and interstitial ads, which is a separate Google advertising product described in section 8.

The App does not request access to your contacts, camera, microphone for recording, calendar, or files beyond what Android needs to store the App’s own local database and settings.

5. Information stored on your device

Most information the App keeps is stored only on your device, using Android local storage (including Room database and DataStore preferences).

Theme preference and dynamic-color preference are stored locally so the App can remember how you like it to look.

Recent search keywords and media-type choices may be stored locally so you can repeat a search.

Favorites (saved works and pinned licenses) are stored locally, including titles, creators, license labels, identifiers, and thumbnail URLs where available.

A short-lived search-result cache may be stored locally so recently fetched catalog results can be shown again, including when a later request fails or the device is offline.

Attribution form fields that you type (work title, creator name, source URL, optional extra text, and selected license) are held in the App’s memory and may be used to build a credit line. They are not uploaded to a developer server.

If you use Android backup, device-to-device transfer, or a similar system backup, local App data may be included in that backup according to your device and Google account settings. That process is controlled by the operating system, not by Creative Commons or Openverse.

6. Information sent when you search or load media

License tools, comparison, chooser, and attribution work on the device and do not require a network connection. Opening Share my work, official license pages, or ads does require the internet.

Those requests typically include the search keywords you typed, media type (images or audio), optional license filter, paging information, and standard technical data that any HTTPS request includes, such as IP address, date and time, and a User-Agent string that identifies this unofficial App.

Openverse, WordPress, their hosting providers, and network operators may receive, log, and process that technical information under their own policies. This unofficial App does not control those third-party systems.

The App does not bypass Openverse rate limits and does not scrape Openverse web pages as a substitute for the public API.

7. Third-party services and websites

Search results come from the Openverse catalog, which indexes openly licensed and public-domain works from many sources. Each result may include a link to an original source website.

If you open an official license deed, legal code, original source page, Share my work (the official Creative Commons chooser at https://creativecommons.org/chooser/), or any other external link, you leave this unofficial App. That website’s own privacy policy, terms, cookies, and practices then apply.

Google Play (or any other store that distributes the App) may collect install, crash, and device information under that store’s policy. This Policy does not cover the store.

You should review Openverse and Creative Commons privacy information on their official websites if you want to understand how those organizations handle data. They are not operators of this App.

8. Advertising (Google AdMob)

The App uses the Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) to show advertisements. Banner ads may appear at the top of the Home screen. Full-screen interstitial ads may appear when you tap a feature (such as Search, Chooser, Attribution, Compare, Public Domain, a license, a search result, or Share my work). The feature opens after the ad is closed, or immediately if no ad is ready.

Google AdMob and Google’s advertising partners may collect or receive: advertising ID (where the device provides one), IP address, device and app identifiers, approximate location derived from IP address, device type and settings, app events (including that an ad was requested, shown, or clicked), and diagnostic data needed to serve and measure ads.

Google may use that information to serve ads, measure performance, combat fraud and abuse, and (where permitted) personalize ads. Google’s processing is described at https://policies.google.com/privacy and https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

The independent developer of this unofficial App does not receive your name or email from AdMob as a customer list. Ad revenue reporting in AdMob is aggregated.

You can reset the advertising ID, limit ad tracking, or opt out of personalized ads in your device or Google account advertising settings. Uninstalling the App stops further in-app ad requests from this App.

Ads are not shown on the Privacy Policy, Terms, About, or Acknowledgements screens. Creative Commons and Openverse do not serve these ads and are not advertisers for this unofficial App.

9. Clipboard, sharing, and deep links

If you tap copy, the App places attribution text, HTML, or a license URL on the device clipboard at your request. Clipboard contents may be visible to other apps according to Android behavior.

If you tap share, the Android share sheet may send text you chose to another app you select. That destination app has its own privacy practices.

The App can open a search screen from an in-app deep link using the openmark://search pattern. The App does not use that mechanism to collect extra personal data.

10. Permissions

The App requests ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE so it can detect offline status and show saved tools and cached results instead of a failed live search.

The Google Mobile Ads SDK may use the advertising ID (AAID) on devices that provide one, so that ads can be served, limited, and measured. Android may merge the com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID permission from the ads SDK. You can reset the advertising ID, delete advertising ID, or opt out of ads personalization in Android Settings or your Google account advertising settings, depending on your device.

The App does not require location, contacts, camera, or storage access to your personal photo library in order to provide its core features.

11. Children

The App is a general-audience education and discovery tool. It is not directed at children under 13, and it is not designed to collect personal information from children.

Because the App shows Google ads, it is not intended as a children’s app under COPPA or similar rules. Do not allow a child to use the App as a child-directed product.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child provided personal information through a third-party site or advertisement opened from the App, you should contact that website or Google. This unofficial App does not operate those sites.

12. Retention, deletion, and your choices

On-device data remains until you clear it, clear the App’s storage in Android settings, or uninstall the App.

In Settings you can clear search history and clear favorites. Those actions delete the selected local records from this device and cannot be undone.

You can use license tools offline without sending search queries. You can also choose not to open original source pages. Ads still require a network connection when they are requested.

Advertising identifiers and ad logs held by Google are retained according to Google’s policies, not by this unofficial App’s local database.

Uninstalling the App removes the App and its local database from the device, subject to any OS-level backup copies you have enabled, and stops further ad requests from this App.

13. Security

Network requests to the catalog API and to Google’s ads servers are made over HTTPS. Local favorites and settings are stored in the App’s private storage on the device.

No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure. You should protect your device with a screen lock and keep the operating system updated.

Because this is an unofficial App with no developer-side user account, the developer cannot remotely reset “your account.” Control of local data stays on the device, except for information Openverse, Google AdMob, or another third party may log when you use the network.

14. International processing

If you search, your request is processed by Openverse infrastructure, which may be located outside your country. Your use of search means that technical data related to that request may be transferred to those locations according to Openverse’s own practices.

If ads are requested, Google may process advertising data on servers outside your country, as described in Google’s privacy policy.

The independent developer of this unofficial App does not operate a global user database for the App.

15. Legal bases and your rights

Where a privacy law such as the GDPR or similar rules applies, processing that happens on your device is based on providing the App you chose to install, and on your request when you search, copy, share, or save an item.

Advertising by Google may rely on Google’s own legal bases, including your device or account advertising choices. This unofficial App does not operate a separate consent form for Google’s ads network. Use your device and Google advertising settings to limit personalization.

Because the developer does not keep a cloud profile of you, many access or deletion requests are already in your control through on-device Settings, Android app-storage controls, and uninstall.

For data held by Openverse, Google, or a source website, you must use that organization’s own process. This unofficial App cannot delete records from third-party catalogs, ad networks, or websites.

16. Do not sell or share for advertising

The developer of this unofficial App does not sell your personal information in the sense of handing a customer list to another company for money.

Ads are served by Google AdMob. Google and its advertising partners may use the advertising ID and related technical data to provide advertising, including personalized advertising where allowed. If a privacy law treats certain ad-related sharing as a “sale” or “share,” you can use Google’s and your device’s ad-personalization controls, and you can uninstall the App.

Third parties such as Openverse may receive technical request data when you search, as described above.

17. Changes to this Policy

This Policy may be updated from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this screen will change when a revision is published in the App.

Continued use of the App after an update means you are using the App under the revised Policy. If you do not agree, stop using the App and uninstall it.

Do not send support or privacy requests about this App to Creative Commons, Openverse, or WordPress. They do not operate this unofficial application.
