A New Life

In the short span of human life, events sometimes occur that lie far beyond a person’s thoughts and imagination. One may never have believed that something similar could happen to oneself, yet life is defined by this very unpredictability. Within moments, a person can lose control over their own existence and begin to feel like a puppet whose strings are being held by someone else.

It is not only women who become victims of oppression and abuse and are then left at the mercy of circumstances like a kite whose string has snapped. Many men are also caught in the merciless storms of life and experience the same sense of helplessness. When the limits of endurance are finally broken, no desire remains in the heart and no vitality is left in the soul. A person may continue to live outwardly, yet become so broken inside that all sense of direction, independence and hope is lost.

Some people are treated as though they were controlled by a remote, as if their feelings, intentions and decisions depended entirely on the wishes of another person. Nor is it true that only weak people are driven by the weight of their circumstances towards suicide. At times, even courageous, strong and outwardly confident individuals allow a painful event or an apparently minor hurt to settle so deeply within them that it gradually takes control of their entire existence. As they suffer in silence, they continue to break from within and may eventually end a life that appears complete from the outside but has long been empty on the inside.

On the other hand, there are people who, despite their emotions, try to judge their situation according to reality and continue walking alongside life. This is not an easy path. It requires extraordinary courage, emotional maturity and immense patience. Such people do not allow their hardships to destroy them. Instead, they emerge from their trials stronger and continue carrying the burden of life with quiet determination.

Heartbreak and disappointment can hollow a person out from within. Memories may leave such deep wounds that every breath brings another wave of pain. Nothing feels pleasant, the heart finds peace nowhere, and life becomes a heavy burden on one’s shoulders. Even then, some people refrain from taking their own lives because a quiet but powerful voice rises from a hidden corner of their heart: Stop, be patient, perhaps everything will become better. That voice becomes the final ray of hope, protecting a person from completely falling apart even in the deepest darkness.

Many people have suffered disappointment and emotional collapse, yet they did not lose courage and tried to begin a new life. They walked through parks, spoke with their neighbours and met people at work, on buses and on trams. Still, none of these encounters brought comfort to their hearts because their inner world had already changed completely.

They wanted to forget everything, not because their memories were weak, but because their wounds were still fresh. Yet somewhere among those broken moments, a new beginning continued to breathe—quietly, but steadily.

Some considered changing their jobs. Others thought about leaving the country, building a new life or separating from their life partners. The possibilities existed and the paths were open, yet they were unable to take action. It was not because circumstances made change impossible, but because their courage failed them and their emotions stood in their way at every turn.

Their decisions therefore remained alive only in their thoughts and never reached the threshold of action. They remained suspended between their wishes and their limitations.

It is often said that in order to bring about change, a person must first change themselves. Before moving towards a new life, one should ask oneself a few fundamental questions, because the answers to those questions provide direction for the steps ahead.

The first question should be: What exactly do I want to change? Do I want to change my habits, reactions, decisions and way of thinking? Or do I simply want other people and external circumstances to change?

The truth is that no one can force another person to change, nor can an entire system be transformed overnight. However, the door to changing one’s own priorities, thoughts and behaviour always remains open. A new life can begin only when a person recognises their own weaknesses, makes a decision despite their fears and takes the first step themselves instead of waiting for others to change.

When a person accepts their circumstances while continuing to work towards improving them, their self-confidence gradually begins to grow. A new life is not created by a sudden miracle; it is the result of small but consistent decisions. Every right step helps a person leave the burden of the past behind and move towards hope, inner peace and self-determination.
