Science has come along way in the last few hundred years. We know more about birds than ever before, and scientists all over the world have devoted their lives to this research. Yet, many of us couldn't even name the species we see in our gardens every day.
Our ancestors relied on nature. They knew which species of plant was poisonous and which animals were dangerous because they had to to survive. But the vocabulary of nature seems to have disappeared from our everyday lives.
So, next time you go walking through the marshes, bring this guide along with you. Keep an eye out for these birds. Each species has its own story, so pay attention to their body shapes, their calls, their feather patterns. Listen for melodic song of the Skylark, or the chattering of the Little Tern. Try and imagine what their lives are like. How are they similar? How are they different? How might their lives be affected by climate change?
For young explorers, download our colouring book. See if you can spot these birds, and colour them in when you get home. Try and remember their unique colours and markings, and send us your artwork - we'd love to see it!
