Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed every single title that the developer Nippon Ichi has produced over the years. As you read this little write-up keep in mind that I am totally partial to this lineup of games.
I would urge any gamer out there who is seeking something fresh to dive into this abyss of maniacal grinding, comical sprites and hilarious power moves.
Each game is set in an alternate dimension with some sort of powerful protagonist being the main character.
Beautiful Animated Storyline

You would usually have an end goal which could be defeating a god, or becoming the king of the Netherworld (a strange version of hell). Along your journey, you will encounter rivals, form new bonds with weird allies and foster friendship with creatures of all sorts (Monsters, Angels, Robots, and Humans).
You can form your party with different characters, equip them with powerful gear and skills and then take them into the battlefield and wreak havoc.
The game has some of the most mind-boggling exp grinding I have ever experienced in all my years of gaming. The level caps are ridiculous with them being 9999 in the games produced till the recent Disgaea 5. In the new game coming this year Disgaea 6, the level cap has been advertised at 99,999,999. That's insane! There is also a feature known as reincarnation which I will get into a bit more detail in the list section.
Alright, enough rambling let's move on to our list.

There are currently 6 main titles, the most recent just releasing this year. There are also spinoffs and a sequel to the original (Disgaea D2).
Each title contains countless hours of wacky stories with lovable characters and great moments.
There is also the senate feature which allows you to pass motions in a court made up of demons and monsters that allow you to alter gameplay to your liking. Some examples of bills you can pass in the game can be to increase the level of your enemies, unlock new characters, get greater exp gains etc.
The Netherworld Hospital is where you heal up your party before heading back into battle. You receive gifts for getting wounded on a map or even when a character in a party dies. The greater the cost for healing your party the better the items you will receive. That's totally bonkers!
The skills are animated like cartoons with cheesy powers. Characters also have awkward quips and interjections in the cut-scenes that are comedic to the core.
Most of the games in the series require you to complete the entire story at least twice before you can gain access to special maps, items and endgame characters.

This sounds too good to be true and to be honest when I first started out in the series I honestly thought this in-game mechanic was hogwash. I was proved totally wrong.
In essence, you can capture any enemy you find on the map by lifting and throwing them into your base panel. This will trigger a battle between the target and the rest of your party that has not left the base panel.
If the stats of your party in the base panel are buffed enough the enemy will be captured. On completion of the level, the captured character will be available to join your party portfolio.

The series is known for locking certain content till the main game has been completed at least once. There are also extra modes after the game has been completed that you can try out with different stories and a different lead character.
There are also alternate modes like the land of carnage and the Chara world (in newer games) that will take hundreds of hours to go through.
The item world, in particular, has been a highlight of the series since the first game.
It is an alternate dimension that is accessible through the main story. Here you will be able to level up your items and capture innocents (monsters that live in your weapons and armour). Doing so will give you obscene stat bursts that will ensure your completion domination over most of the content in the series.

As mentioned above, the max level for each character is 9999 but the developer added a feature called reincarnation. This downgrades a level 9999 character down to level 1 but with increased stats through bonus points. This series has completely tailored its experience to suit all sorts of players. For those who just want to experience the story, it can be played through in a couple of hours with minimal grinding. I would not recommend this as you would lose out on the true endgame experience that this intriguing series of games offers.

Each map is unique in its positioning of enemies and the effects that are applied.
The game-play uses a tile system and a cursor followed by an executable command page.
On each map, there are certain tiles that have effects applied to them. These could be either beneficial to your party or could lead to straight out defeat. Therefore close attention has to be paid on every map to ensure a flawless victory. Overall the game plays like Sheldon's 3D chess from the Big Bang Theory sitcom.
