Assoc. w/ CN:
Glossopharyngeal n. (CN9)
Vagus n. (CN10)
Accessory n. (cranial root) (CN11)
Structure:
An elongated column of typical motor neurons, extending throughout the length of medulla.
Location:
Nucleus ambiguus is so named because it is not clearly defined in sections of the medulla.
Ventrolateral reticular formation;
Dorsal to the inferior olivary nuc.
Ventromedial to spinal trigeminal nuc.
Fibers course
First directed dorsally and then turn sharply in the ventrolateral direction to mingle w/ other fibres of CN9, CN10 & CN11;
Emerge from medulla along the posterolateral sulcus.
Target: (Supply the mus. derived from 3rd, 4th and 6th branchial arches)
CN9 ⇒ Stylopharyngeus muscle & possibly superior pharyngeal constrictor
CN10 ⇒ Skeletal muscle of pharynx except stylopharyngeus, larynx, upper 2/3 of esophagus, palate (except tensor palati)
CN11 ⇒ skeletal muscle of palate & larynx except tensor palatini
