At its heart, this league defies convention: it's not driven by rigid bureaucracy or formal affiliations, but by the raw love of the game and a deep belief in community, competition, and respect.

Craig's story is remarkable not only for his founding role but also for his inspiring personal journey. Now in his early 70s, he remains an active and competitive participant in the games he started, despite undergoing two total knee replacements. Physicians had warned he could not play full-court basketball again, but Craig defied those odds. After undergoing surgeries in his late 50s and early 60s, he committed intensely to both pre- and post-operative physical therapy. Within nine months of his final surgery, he was back on the court, playing three-hour sessions twice weekly against men decades younger than him and keeping up.

Under Craig's leadership, SIBL has become a melting pot of basketball enthusiasts, welcoming over 500 players from 27 countries across four continents. This rich diversity, encompassing a variety of cultures, creeds, and languages, is a testament to the league's inclusive spirit. Whether they are engineers, doctors, teachers, law enforcement officers, executives, priests, ex-convicts, mechanics, drivers, or morticians, every player is united by their love for the game.

Craig has meticulously maintained a league culture grounded in three fundamental rules: no racism or religious intolerance; no politics; and no intent to hurt other players. These rules are strictly enforced, ensuring that every game remains safe, respectful, and full of good sportsmanship. In a polarised world, SIBL remains a portrait of what community and competition can look like when centred on respect and shared passion.

His impact is also felt off the court. Craig has worked as a leader in logistics, serving in top roles at companies like DHL Airways and Skynet Worldwide Express, and going on to found Open Man Consulting. Through these roles, he demonstrated strategic vision and leadership that scaled businesses globally, achievements that further underscore his multifaceted expertise.

Yet beyond business success, Craig's legacy is most visible in the lives he has enriched and the community he has fostered. For many players, some working through recovery from addiction or troubled backgrounds, SIBL has been more than just a game: it's been a lifeline, offering camaraderie, purpose, and a path toward renewal. On numerous occasions, Craig has even spoken at Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings to acknowledge players' milestones in sobriety, celebrating how basketball and community helped sustain their journeys.

As SIBL celebrated its 45th year in 2025, Craig looked back with pride at the league's evolution. What began as a small group of high-school and college-level players has blossomed into a thriving community that spans generations. SIBL is not just a place to play basketball; it is a living model of how competition and connection can build bridges and foster a sense of belonging.
