Hi I'm Liz and I hope you will join with me in using the skills that you have to show a deaf world the extent of our climate emergency. I've known about increasing carbon levels in the atmosphere since undergraduate studies in the early 1980's but it took An Inconvenient Truth in 2006 to shake me from my complacency.
In 2020 Common Grace, Australia began their Knit for Climate Action project to organise women from across Australia to knit 16 colour climate scarves to be gifted to all Australian Federal politicians. This occurred on #ShowYourStripes day on June 21, 2021.
I took part in this project, although, in the end, my local right-wing politician refused to accept the scarf. I initially wanted to it encourage an online community during the many Covid-19 lockdowns that occurred in Melbourne that year. This slowly evolved into my knitting of simpler 6 colour 'footy' climate scarves for family and friends. The designs evolved from impressionistic scarves using gradient yarns to show the trend, into lacy or textured styles into my current preferred style of 8 colour marled scarves. At each stage I shared my knitting patterns on Ravelry, hoping that others would use them to spread the message in their area (as Janie has).
Prior to 2023, all scarves were gifted to others. Early in 2023, prompted by XR Occupy Melbourne preparations, I decided to begin selling my scarves to other activists at close to cost. Once I had set up my own marketing and distribution system using free online resources, I decided to share those resources with others - thus this site. Please share your story in the Facebook group.
My dream is that over the next 5 years, across the western world, whenever someone is intending to buy an energy using appliance or vehicle, they see someone wearing a climate wearable that reminds them to reconsider their purchase or, at least, prioritise minimal climate impact.
