Practical information

Location: Talks will be held in Room S1, building 16 Rainforest Walk, Monash University Clayton campus.

Transportation:

Monash University, Clayton campus, is in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia.

From the airport:

  • Airport shuttle: Directly to Monash from Melbourne airport.
  • Public transit: Take the Sky Bus to Southern Cross Station, then train and/or bus to Monash University (see below).

Public Transit to/from Monash Clayton:

  • Monash Clayton is serviced by several bus lines, and is also near the Pakenham/Cranbourne train line. A journey planner from Public Transit Victory is available here.

Be careful to search for a stop at Clayton (e.g. "Monash University/Wellington Rd (Clayton)"), as Monash has other campuses in and around Melbourne, and "Monash" is a common place name in Melbourne.

  • More information on transit and parking at Monash University is available here.

Accommodation and meals:

  • We expect to provide lunch on campus during the workshop to all registered participants.
  • Student-style accommodation (with shared bathrooms) is available at Mannix College, just across the street from campus. Base rate is $77 AUD per night. Breakfast and dinner can be added (continental breakfast $6.50 AUD, hot breakfast $9.50 AUD, dinner $16 AUD per person per day). We have reserved a block of these rooms. Please contact Angelika Nikolov-Arvela (angelika.nikolov-arvela@monash.edu) if you would like to reserve one.
  • We have also reserved a very small number of rooms with ensuite bathrooms at Mannix College, for $125 AUD per night. Contact Angelika (angelika.nikolov-arvela@monash.edu) to see about availability.
  • Accommodation in Melbourne: The Clayton campus of Monash University is easily accessible by public transportation from the Central Business District (CBD) of Melbourne (see info on Public Transit), so it is also possible to book a room closer to the CBD and commute to campus. Hotel rates will vary.

Support for caregivers:

We understand that family and caregiving activities can make travel difficult for many. The following are available to those with carer responsibilities.

  • Rooms for breastfeeding needs, including pumping and refrigerator space.
  • Private accommodation, including the option to reserve larger rooms for family -- please inquire.
  • Small grants to help support those with young children or other caregiving responsibilities. For example, Australian mathematicians are eligible to apply for the Anne Penfold Street Award. Others can apply for funding through Monash gender equity programs. Please contact the organisers for more information.

Funding: Deadline 31 August 2018

  • Some funding will be available, especially for students, early career researchers, and those without other sources of travel funding.
  • To apply for funding, tick the appropriate box on the registration page. You will need to include your estimated expenses, and a short statement on how your research fits the conference themes (600 words maximum). Students should arrange for a letter of recommendation to be sent to CQ3DT18@gmail.com.
  • The deadline to apply for funding is 31 August 2018. Decisions will be made soon after that.

Funding for AMSI Members:

  • This event is sponsored by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI). AMSI allocates a travel allowance annually to each of its member universities (for list of members, see http://amsi.org.au/membership/members/).
  • Students or early career researchers from AMSI member universities without access to a suitable research grant or other source of funding may apply to the Head of Mathematical Sciences for subsidy of travel and accommodation out of the departmental travel allowance.
  • Go to http://research.amsi.org.au/travel-funding/ for more information.
