Course Policy
Grading
There will be 3 in-class exams; best two for 20 points each (A,B)
10 homework will be worth a total of 20 points (C)
The final exam is worth 35 points (D)
Each recitation you attend is worth .5 points up to 4.5 points (meaning we drop 3) (E)
Filling out course surveys is worth .5 points (F)
The final grade will be A + B + C + D + E + F
Each homework will have 4 questions, each of which will have both a numerical grade and an S/I/U grade.
The numerical grades, along with any individualized feedback, will be seen on your graded submission on Gradescope. This will be mapped to an S/N/U grade which will be seen in the Canvas gradebook.
S = 100% is awarded for solutions that use appropriate techniques and analysis and I = 50% is awarded for solutions that make a significant attempt at solving the problem but do not use appropriate techniques or analysis, and U = 0% for a negligible or no attempt. We will take the best 75% of your questions across homework and average the S/I/U scores to compute (C).
The course grade will be curved. For your reference, the median grade when Kamesh has taught has been a B+.
Discussion and Practice
Course discussions and announcements will happen on Ed Discussions. Both Ed Discussions and Gradescope are linked from Canvas. Please let us know if you have trouble with the links.
In general, solve as many extra problems as you can. This course is all about developing problem solving skills, so the more you practice on your own, the better. So we encourage you to form pairs, in order to discuss and solve extra problems from the textbook. In addition to coming to office hours, one option to checking solutions is to feed the questions to an LLM like ChatGPT or Gemini; however please exercise care in interpreting the solutions as they tend to have subtle mistakes.
Late Policy and Makeups
There will be no credit for late submissions of homework, regardless of reason, including STINFs.
There will be no makeup exams. If you are missing two exams, please let us know.
