Andres Perez-Rojas, Ph.D.
I am an assistant professor in the Counseling Psychology Program in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology at New Mexico State University. My research interests include psychotherapy process and outcome, with emphases on the therapeutic relationship, the therapist's inner experience, training and supervision, and college student mental health. I am also interested in various aspects of culture and multiculturalism broadly speaking, such as language and bilingualism, cross-cultural psychology, cultural identity, and the role of culture in psychotherapy. Outside of academics, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, playing the ukulele, and creative writing.
Rebecca Brown, M.A.
Hello- My name is Rebecca and I am a third year doctoral student studying counseling psychology at NMSU. I graduated with a Master in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Idaho State University in 2016. My research interests include multicultural factors related to mental health services, efficacy of treatment modalities in therapy, and resiliency. Alejandro Cervantes, M.S.
Hello! My name is Alejandro Cervantes, and I come from Los Angeles, California. I graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Chicanx Studies, and a minor in Educational Studies. I received my Masters of Science in Counseling with an emphasis in School Counseling from Oklahoma State University, the Stillwater campus. Currently, I am in my third year as a Counseling Psychology doctoral student with a minor in Spanish counseling. My research interests include Latinx youth mental health (more specifically Latino male adolescents), group therapy/group work in schools, and cultural interventions used with the Latinx population. Jasmin Gonzalez, M.A.
Hello, my name is Jazmin and I am second-year doctoral student in the counseling psychology program. I graduated with honors in psychology from Baylor University in 2011, and earned a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2017. My primary research interests include psychotherapy process and outcome, with a specific emphasis on factors that influence the development, course, and strength of the therapeutic relationship. In my free time, I enjoy performing with my folk rock band, composing music, and writing.
Chlese Lang, M.A.
Hello, my name is Chelse Lang, and I am a second-year doctoral student from eastern North Carolina. I received my BS in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my MA in Counseling Psychology from Towson University in Maryland. My research interests include mental health equity for survivors of intimate partner violence, particularly survivors from marginalized identities, and issues around LGBT minority stress. Brett Opelt, M.S.
Hello, my name is Brett and I am a second-year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology program. I am originally from Wisconsin and worked in Wisconsin for the past 3 years in a free-standing psychiatric hospital. My research interests involve military issues, particularly veteran and active duty college students. I also am interested in research areas in regard to trauma, addiction, suicidal ideation, and the counseling process, particularly in regard to the interactions between the client and the therapist.
