Alumni Stories Shape the Next Generation of Journalists

Our story has always been one of connection, built through storytelling, truth-seeking, and mentorship. The INSPIRE mentorship program continues the tradition by linking Cal Poly Journalism alumni with current students preparing to launch their professional journeys.

Since its creation in 2017 by a former advisory board member, the program has grown steadily each year. What began as a call to bridge students with alumni working across journalism, public relations, and creative communications has become an essential part of the Cal Poly Journalism experience. In 2025, we were proud to connect a record number of students paired with working and retired professionals.

As an INSPIRE Mentor, You Will:

• Guide students as they navigate academic and professional decisions

• Build meaningful connections with emerging storytellers and communicators

• Share career insights, resume tips, and networking guidance

• Stay engaged with the Cal Poly Journalism community in a flexible, rewarding way
