1- Advice for choosing your instrument:

• Pitch/sound preference- Students are happiest when they love the sound of their instrument! Some people prefer higher, lower, or medium pitches.

• Readiness/ Open Mind- Be ready to make a good effort with a positive approach!  Learning to play an instrument will be both challenging and rewarding.

• Instrument fittings- I will meet with each student to may sure that their instrument choice will fit them.  I will check for:

  • Lip size/shape and teeth structure

  • Finger size/arm length

  • Ability to produce sound on instrument

2- Band Rentals

Having a good quality instrument will help students find success!

If possible, please avoid purchasing an instrument online.  Often, online instruments are low-quality, break easily, and are difficult to play.

If you need help renting an instrument, please ask Dr. Mincer

We will use instruments during our first band class, the week of September 14!

Already Own/Rent Your Instrument

• Be sure your instrument is in good condition.  Contact Dr. Mincer if you have questions.

• Borrowing an instrument from friends or family may also be a great option!  Again, good condition is important.

Rental Assistance

• FCPS offers instrument rentals (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion only) for $20 per year for students who qualify for "Instructional Rental Assistance" 

• Your teacher will send you an instrument rental contract if you choose this option on your band registration form.

Music Store Rental

• This is a popular option!  Music stores can provide quality instruments, and repairs (and loaners during repairs)!

Large instruments

• Baritone/euphonium and tuba are very large and can be rented from Powell.  You will have 1 instrument at home and 1 at school.  You would carry just the mouthpiece to school.
