Design VI : COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces students to critical engineering design topics such as needs assessment, problem formulation, modeling, patents, abstraction and synthesis, economic analysis, product liability, ergonomics, engineering ethics, hazards analysis, design for X, material selection, and manufacturing processes. Students learn that engineering is a service profession, dedicated to satisfying humanity's needs through responsible, methodical, and creative problem solving.

Local Host Communication Server

• Objective: To create a voice / video chat software that has good privacy and server stability. With private local hardware servers.
• Background: For companies who need a means of internal communication
• Methodology: Create custom small internal servers that can be installed at a company. This way all of that companies data will be held on their own internal server and would be much less vulnerable to hacking or security issues with the voice / video chat company. (If skype or another company gets hacked the data would be on a local server at the company and not be found)
• Expected Results: These private servers would make companies feel more secure with their data and would not be difficult to make as they could be specialized to focus on this one task.
• Costs: $200 dollars or so for the local server with a monthly fee for the voice chat software and maintenance. (Could go a similar route to Verizon fios and their set top boxes)
