The Coronavirus pandemic brought tragedy, fear, and challenges to people around the world. It has also brought communities together. We have seen heroes emerge from those working the front lines (healthcare professionals, police, and grocery store employees) to teachers continuing the education, support, and care of students. Everyone everywhere is readjusting how they live and work. This also brought an opportunity to Confluence Preparatory journalism students for real-world, timely reporting. Here are their stories and stories from guest contributors as well.
The Coronavirus pandemic has changed the world as we know it. At this time, more people have lost their lives to the coronavirus than in 9/11. Hotels are now hospitals. Healthcare workers are heroes dressed in gowns, battling on the front lines. The travel industry has been hit hard, flight bookings are down by more than 95%. Companies are laying off employees in massive numbers. The country is starting to "open" back up, but how much of the new normal is here to stay and for how long? How long will professional sports play without live fans, how long before people can safely go back in public without a face mask, and how will school and classrooms look in the Fall? Our world is changing... and even the experts don't have the answers for how much.
Each year the St. Louis Post Dispatch and the St. Louis Cardinals team up to honor the highest academic students in the area. By averaging a 3.5 GPA or better in this year's first semester, they are called "Straight A" students. All who achieve this level of excellence are recognized in the Post Dispatch, and receive vouchers for two tickets to a Cardinals baseball game. Numerous dates are made available. The students just have to either go online or to the box office to get their tickets. This year may be a bit more difficult, as the schedule is currently in limbo. Hopefully, baseball will reopen and spectators will be allowed into the stadium. If that happens, the qualifying Confluence students would need to go by the front desk of the high school to see if we have received the vouchers by then. Congratulations!!
For seniors that still haven’t chosen the college that best fits them, you might be in luck! Due to the coronavirus, many schools have pushed back National College Decision Day to June 1st. Decision Day, which is normally May 1st, is the day seniors commit to their college. Now, seniors have an extra month and teachers and staff want you to know they are here to help! Here is their advice… If you didn’t have a chance to visit the college, you can go online for a virtual tour. Stay on point with your grades as colleges will look at your final transcript. Whatever college you choose, you may need an ACT score. The next scheduled testing date is June 13th. If you have decided on your college, be sure to check out their website and communicate via email with the admissions office about next steps for paying housing deposits and enrolling. And remember, you can always contact anyone at CPA for help!

Many of us are stuck at home with family during this pandemic due to the “Stay at Home” order issued to Americans all around the world. So how will we keep busy and make the days more fun? Mark Bunting, a broadcast anchor and reporter, says, “If you are at home, make the best of it when you can by spending quality time with your families.” The activities he suggests include the following….
Pack a family picnic that you purchased from one of the local restaurants through their to go service and head out to the back yard. Spread a blanket and enjoy.
Bake some bread or cookies. Eating them is even more fun.
Schedule and enjoy a family dinner.
Binge watch Netflix shows like “All American”.
Have a virtual concert.
These tips are just a few ways to help prevent boredom while in the house. CPA senior Aria Richardson says, “It’s bittersweet for the seniors to end our last year in such a tragic way, but I love making TikTok videos with my younger siblings and baking cookies with them.” Marquel Waters says, “This crazy time has given me time to build an even stronger bond with my family and create traditions like making family dinners every Tuesday just for fun.”
This year CPA students and staff participated in our first virtual spirit week to help bring some positivity and togetherness in these strange and difficult times. Members of student government corresponded over email to plan fun filled activities for the staff and students at CPA. Days included: Animal Day, Video Dance Challenge, Watcha Watchin Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and Reality vs. Wish. Students that received the most, “likes,” received a $40 gift card to Dominos! If you didn’t have the opportunity to participate you can still see what people posted by going to the following links, in fact you can even still post:
