by Chad Franklin and Denise Cardona, Goddard Riverside Options Center, June 2020
In late March of 2020, the Options Center conducted a survey of its college students. By the end of May, we had 167 responses, and this is what we heard:
Good News:
98% of all students have access to living space
98% have a working phone that has access to internet
95% of all students has a working computer at home
92% of all students has internet/WiFi Service
Bad news:
5% do not have a working computer at home
8% do not have internet/Wifi Services
11% do not have enough food until the end of the semester
30% do not have access to a learning space
33% do not feel confident about adapting to online learning
59% lost jobs or had their hours reduced
Our counselors have been working to support students individually to gain access to food, noise cancelling headphones, and much more. Our program and agency leaders have been using the data to raise resources to more fully meet the needs of our students and their families during this crushingly hard time.
Options is excited to participate in the joint survey with Research Alliance and so many of you, to continue to learn what our students need and how we can support them.
